@thephdstory Also new faculty here - Something I was told to consider was joining one department committee, one school committee, and one university committee. Diversifying the impact. Not sure if thatโs true to all universities or not, but something.
When choosing a graduate research advisor, do all you can to choose someone who will not only be a great mentor now but who will be there for you throughout your career.
You never know where your career will take you and having a mentor as a supporter and advisor is invaluable.

Now that Iโm an assistant prof, I feel bad asking my mentors for smaller bits of help. I feel like thatโs only allowed for grad students or post docs. ๐ค
Itโs funny how much focus there is on finishing your PhD when youโre doing it, but then once youโve finished it, you kind of feel lost.

Having to ask "weird barbie" for advice is the equivalent of having to ask the most senior grad student for department lore and how to navigate in said space.
