Congratulations to the three newly minted coral doctors from the @TheBaumsLab: @ConnTrinity , Cornelia Osborne and Nicolas Locatelli! You did amazing work individually and collectively. It's been wonderful to see all these insights on Caribbean corals emerge from your theses.
And with Nick’s successful m defense today all the @TheBaumsLab members left at Penn State are all doctors!!!! Couldn’t have asked to go through this crazy journey with any other amazing scientists
@ConnTrinity@IlianaBaums@TheBaumsLab Awww Congratulations Drs! What a beautiful picture of you three. Your hard work and dedication have truly paid off. Best of luck in your next projects 🪸 🧬.

New preprint: Genome assemblies and genetic maps for Caribbean Acropora palmata and A. cervicornis!
Both species have 14 chromosomes and largely similar genome structure. Notable exceptions were a 2.5Mb inversion and a 1.4 Mb translocation.
UPDATE: May's global average atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) was about 421 parts per million (ppm), a roughly 51% increase since 1750.
This rise is mainly due to human activities such as burning fossil fuels. Learn more: https://t.co/qjYgQZIzpT (1/3)

Our latest coral CRISPR paper is out at @PNASNews. We extended our methods to study gene function in coral juveniles. We found that a hard coral-specific bicarbonate transporter is required for coral skeleton formation.

⚠️ Sadly, the presence of the stony coral tissue loss disease #SCTLD has been reported for the first time in the Atoll Banco Chinchorro, Mexico, after 5 years when it started to spread throughout the Caribbean. 🧵1/n
When it comes to preserving the world’s coral reefs, what’s going on above the surface is as important as what’s going on below it, according to new research conducted at #PennState and led by our own Tomás López-Londoño and @lab_prieto. https://t.co/Pxb5qleC3L
A rare and momentous event it is to graduate a Ph.D. student. So proud of Kira E. Turnham who successfully defended here dissertation before a supportive and pleased grad committee on Thursday Dec. 9th @PennStateBio with @momedinamunoz @lab_prieto@ProfessorFungus@IlianaBaums
Defended on the 8th! Celebrated on the 9th! Now the work begins on several important manuscripts to add to her other published works @PennStateBio @turnkira @Symbiodiniaceae
