Alex Ovechkin announced to his teammates this morning that this season will be his final in the NHL

[Ted Leonsis @TedLeonsis]

It is a tremendous honor to be elected Chairman of the @NHL Board of Governors. Before and throughout my ownership of the @Capitals, I have first and foremost been a fan of this league and game.

I’m grateful to Jeremy Jacobs for his many years of leadership, to Gary for his stewardship and to my fellow owners for their trust. Looking forward to working alongside Vice Chairman Murray Edwards to continue pushing the league forward.

HE’S DONE IT!!! Alex Ovechkin has broken Wayne Gretzky’s @NHL scoring record of 894 goals. 💥

With 895 goals to Alex’s name, ALL scored wearing a @Capitals jersey, the GR8 Chase is officially over… and what a journey it’s been!

@ovi8’s accomplishments as an athlete and person, and his unbreakable connection to this team, this city and this fanbase are nothing short of remarkable. What an important moment in history for Alex, his family and the entire DC community.

Thank you, Alex, for your commitment to the Caps and the DC community both on and off the ice. You’ve inspired a generation of hockey players in the making, and have made DC truly proud! #ALLCAPS
