Fav SM takeaway is social shaping. Easy to deride SM for its shortcomings. We users determine how we use social media. Many positives & SM is here to stay. We establish our SM etiquette and ideologies. Adapt or stay home.

@kylamferry Hi Kyla, I say beneficial, for people who dont have a real place to go, or didnt want to be accidently seen in a bar, or who were shy and wanted to participate but were reticent. The benefits outweigh risks for them I think.

@AshleeBleier Agreed Ashlee. Whatever negatives one raises about SM, it enables me to connect with the pals I met in Japan last year and keeps us in touch. I wouldn't trade that for the good old days.

Are our divisions worse than ever, and due to SM? Civil War JimCrow CivilRights times more violent and hate-filled than now IMO. As Baym wrote, less cues and anonymity facilitate hate speech but does SM just display it or truly make it worse?

@moses_femino Hi Moses, regardless of age, we likely have similar psychological needs. Why are older people (like me) much less likely to use SM then? Are the obstacles psychological, social, cultural, technological...? I think mostly cultural, a little technological.

@nathanielhoeye I think Baym wrote the selfie became huge around 2013? could it be the network's streaming speed and the editing and upload apps needed to evolve? video clips I see now are so amazing compared to the crude things I recall from 10 years ago.

@AshleeBleier Ashlee thanks for this link. I liked the positivity of the video after we read a lot of potentially or actually concerning things about SM (eg bullying, addiction, grabbing). How to remove incorrect things on our footprint seems hard tho.
