A MUSLIM WOMAN IN HER MENSES IS NOT IMPURE. Sorry that I shouted. I am tired of seeing people say a menstruating woman is impure.
A Muslim woman is not impure because of her menses. Her menses does not make impure. Why is it necessary to say this?
Some men desert their wives when they are menstruating with such erroneous belief that they are impure. Some neglect their food and disallow them from touching them because of menses. Some even entirely desert their beds because of menstruating. THEY ARE ALL IGNORANT.
Menstruation is not a punishment and it's not impurity. It does not disconnect a woman from God or stop her from supplicating to God. The exemption to pray and fast is mercy from Allah, not punishment. It's the reason she is completely gifted the Ṣalāh and required to repay only the fast at her own convenient time. In fact, the time is not limited or constrained to a particular season or session or year. She only needs to repay her fast however and whenever she finds it easy. Although, a conscious Muslim woman would want to quickly repay it in gratitude and obedience to Allah.
The Qur'ān refers to menses as "adhā" which means "pain, difficulty, hardship, discomfort, harm etc". Hattā yathurna means "until they are free of the pain or discomfort that often comes with menses and ends with it". For many women, menstruation is really difficult but without it, they cannot be mothers. So, they endure and God rewards their endurance and perseverance for as long as they are believers and they remain modest.
A good understanding of this will improve how we relate with our women. RasūluLlah SAW would play with his wives and rest on the laps of our mother Aisha while she was menstruating and he would even be reciting verses of the Qur'ān while placing his blessed head on her laps.
It is time to dismiss the poor understanding that menses is impurity because it is not. Only a dirty woman will make it impurity upon herself by letting the blood stay on her body and clothes or by not cleaning and tidying up appropriately.
May Allah grant us better understanding. Āmīn.
