If I had said "Japan in 1941-1942 shows why operational successes do not amount to strategic victory," I doubt people would be upset. Apply this to Iran, and people both left and right get bug-eyed.
This is why war colleges use historical cases: To foster dispassionate analysis
Following intensive talks, we are pleased to announce that the Peace Deal between the United States of America and Islamic Republic of Iran has been REACHED. Both sides have declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.
The official signing ceremony will be on Friday, 19 June in Switzerland.
We would like to thank the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran for their commitment to finding a diplomatic solution to the conflict. We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to our brothers in this mediation effort, the great leadership of State of Qatar, for their support in reaching this agreement. I would also especially thank the visionary leadership of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Republic of Türkiye for their immense contributions in this regard.
With the agreement now in place, mediators will facilitate a series of meetings this week. These pre-implementation discussions will lay the foundation for the technical talks and the official signing ceremony.

Former MI6 Chief Richard Moore: Without China, Russia would have lost war in Ukraine.
North Korean troops and Iranian drones grab headlines. But what keeps Putin in Ukraine is China — chemicals for artillery shells, components for drones and missiles.

We are closer to a peace deal than ever before. With finalisation likely expected in the next 24 hours, Pakistan is preparing for the electronic signing of the peace deal immediately after, followed by technical level talks next week.
We would like to thank United States of America and Islamic Republic of Iran for their ongoing commitment during the negotiations, and we extend our sincere appreciation to our brothers in the region for their support. We are confident that this historic peace deal will form a strong foundation for lasting peace.

The regime is desperate for face-saving wins to sell any deal at home. Watch for Iranian state media to frame restored access to these funds as a major U.S. climb-down. It’s not. Here’s why:
These are proceeds Iran already earned, from oil sales to South Korea (~$6B) and electricity/gas exports to Iraq (~$10B+), that the Biden admin moved (as part of the release deal re US hostages taken by Iran) from inaccessible or less accessible banks/accounts into restricted local-currency accounts in Oman and Qatar at the request of Iran, designated only for humanitarian purchases.
~$6B (South Korea → Qatar): Oil revenues frozen in South Korean banks since 2018. Biden moved them to Qatar’s central bank in euros, into six restricted accounts.
~$1-2B+ (Iraq → Oman): Iraq’s unpaid (now way over $10B) debt to Iran for natural gas and electricity imports. U.S. waivers allowed Iraq to convert and route some of the funds to restricted Oman accounts.
After Oct. 7: Biden asked banks to stop releasing funds from these accounts under massive Congressional pressure. Banks were asked to restrict Iraq/Oman disbursements too.
The real distinction: Restoring humanitarian access = procedural restoration of what already existed before Oct. 7. These funds were never meant to be permanently frozen, they exist because the U.S. already determined this trade is non-sanctionable.
If a deal makes these funds freely available beyond humanitarian limits, lifting the humanitarian-only restriction entirely — that is a genuine U.S. concession.
Restoring pre-Oct. 7 access? A light lift. But the regime will sell it as a victory either way.
Headed back to Washington after a brief but very productive visit to Seoul. Our initial discussions on U.S.-ROK nuclear cooperation were a success and set the stage for continued technical conversations. As we open new areas of cooperation, we continue to push for progress on existing economic and security related issues.
In my meetings with ROK officials, we underscored the need to remain in lock step as we navigate shifting global dynamics and challenges, from ensuring the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz to strengthening critical supply chains and countering regional threats.
We’ve set ambitious goals, but our alliance is up to the task!
We are aware of reports of shots fired near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW and are working to corroborate the information with personnel on the ground. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
NEW: Astronomy crashes into earthly politics. As Trump prepares to meet Xi, the US-China rivalry unfolds in the stars above South America. Argentina has quietly halted a radio telescope project with China after US pressure. US officials also pushed Chile on a similar telescope.
In advance of @POTUS' historic summit with President Xi in Beijing, I will depart on Monday for a quick series of meetings in both Japan and South Korea.
On Tuesday, I will meet in Tokyo with Prime Minister @takaichi_sanae, Finance Minister @satsukikatayama, and other government and private sector representatives for discussions on the U.S.-Japan economic relationship.
On Wednesday, I will stop in Seoul for a discussion with Vice Premier He Lifeng of China, before continuing on to Beijing for the Leaders’ Summit between President Trump and President Xi.
Economic security is national security, and I look forward to a productive series of engagements as we work to advance President Trump’s America First Economic Agenda.

For the first time in decades, three aircraft carriers are operating in the Middle East at the same time. Accompanied by their carrier air wings, the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) and USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) include over 200 aircraft and 15,000 Sailors and Marines.
Only one chance in this lifetime…
Like watching sunset at the beach from the most foreign seat in the cosmos, I couldn’t resist a cell phone video of Earthset. You can hear the shutter on the Nikon as @Astro_Christina is hammering away on 3-shot brackets and capturing those exceptional Earthset photos through the 400mm lens. @AstroVicGlover was in window 3 watching with @Astro_Jeremy next to him.
I could barely see the Moon through the docking hatch window but the iPhone was the perfect size to catch the view…this is uncropped, uncut with 8x zoom which is quite comparable to the view of the human eye. Enjoy.
