When I was in government, we did a nationwide survey that showed that 70% of Nigerians said that they had never been consulted on what should go into the federal or state budgets.

However, there was a year when women in Kano got together, made a list of what they wanted to see in the budget and presented it to the state government. Believe it or not, a lot of their suggestions actually found their way into the budget.

Civil society groups could actually do this, as could professional associations like the NBA, ICAN and COREN. They may not listen but make the demands first and let the governments say No, especially in an election year.

I transferred my bank app to a new phone and discovered I couldn’t make transfers above ₦50,000 within the first 24 hours. I urgently needed to pay my printers, so I rushed to the bank.

There, I was told to simply verify my identity by placing any finger on an ATM. I did, my details popped up instantly, and I completed the transfer.

The same principle can strengthen national security. Since citizens’ details are captured in the National Identity Database, security agencies should be equipped with mobile biometric devices to verify identities on the spot. If a person’s details cannot be found or do not match, further questioning can follow.

A country cannot effectively secure its borders and communities if people can move around without a verifiable identity.

We need to be careful how we profile people. A few years ago, every Fulani herder was unfairly labelled a killer because of the actions of some criminals. We must not repeat that mistake by casually branding innocent people as bandits.

Such profiling can lead to harassment, maiming, or even jungle justice. If you suspect anyone of criminal activity, report them to law enforcement and allow the authorities to do their job. Don't take the law into your own hands.
