@friede College students send their college to hell and have to get it back! Crude, crass, nihilistic, and utterly absurd with some of the most imaginative monsters in all AP with a gleeful disregard for the rules and a forthright hatred for those who enforce them.
@thisdarkfuture That's basically what 4e was. I really do think every play style is valid. It's going to be up to you how you define the kind of game you want. Like just go to your average game shop and you'll find plenty of people who play D&D like a wargame every week.
"Storytelling" as a central tenant of RPG play essentially erases the main way a lot of people play. A lot of people play the game like a game with little focus on characterization, the setting, or much else besides overcoming challenges. This is valid.
@thisdarkfuture Neither am I although tournament wargames are also valid if that's the way people want to play. I don't even think characterization is a necessary component of play if people just want to play themselves as elves.
@thisdarkfuture I don't know what you are exactly disagreeing with. I am agreeing with the OP. I had a bunch of games where my friends had no concern for any kind of narrative. They murder hoboed and fought with everyone and while there were rough patches, it was fun and it remains a valid way
@riseupcomus I feel this. I have made so many little games on my blog but I think people don't see that as legitimate. Even if I put it up on itch as a Pay What You Want, then I would be a "designer" rather than just a blogger
I feel like I need to say more about this, but I definitely think someone needs to say: D&D is a game. You can use it for story telling or you can just play the game without feeling like you have to have a bigger story. Both can be fun.
@Myrmidia I do not think it is a straight evolution. There is no right way to play. In the OSR people often don't write backstories because the first couple of sessions are your backstory. I'm ok both ways, but it is ok to treat D&D like a game first.
