Did you know?
South Sudan is home to the largest land mammal migration on Earth, known as the Great Nile Migration. An aerial wildlife survey conducted between April and May 2023 across the Boma–Badingilo–Jonglei landscape counted nearly 6 million antelope, including:
•~5 million white‑eared kob
•~350,000 Mongalla gazelle
•~300,000 tiang
•~160,000 Bohor reedbuck
These animals annually traverse this region—spanning 120,000 km²—moving from South Sudan into Ethiopia’s Gambella National Park and then looping back .
To give context, this migration dwarfs the famed Serengeti–Maasai Mara migration in Tanzania and Kenya, which involves around 1–1.5 million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles—making South Sudan’s migration nearly four times larger by vehicle count .
It’s important to clarify that whales or bats may migrate over longer distances or in larger numbers in total, but when limited to land mammals, South Sudan currently holds the record for largest quantity involved in a migration — a milestone confirmed in 2024 by African Parks, the United Nations, and researchers.
