Pauline Hanson told a crowd in Brisbane today that the Liberal Party threw her in jail.
There's a rather important problem with that claim.
In 2003, Hanson was convicted of electoral fraud and sentenced to prison. After approximately 11 weeks, her convictions were overturned on appeal.
That really happened. Nobody should pretend otherwise.
But here's what Hanson left out.
In 2004, Queensland's Crime and Misconduct Commission investigated allegations that political interference had influenced her prosecution.
It found no evidence of political pressure, improper influence or misconduct.
The investigation even examined Tony Abbott's involvement in earlier legal proceedings against One Nation. It found that his involvement had not denied Hanson due process.
Hanson has every reason to remember those 11 weeks in prison. Having convictions overturned after spending time behind bars is an incredibly serious experience.
But accusing a political party of putting you in jail is a separate claim, and one that requires evidence.
The official investigation found none.
There is a difference between telling people what happened to you and telling them who you believe was responsible.
That difference matters, especially when you're making the accusation in front of thousands of political supporters. #Auspol2026
