Last week in St. Moritz, our team attended the 6th annual European Keto Live Centre conference โ and the volume of new clinical evidence presented was genuinely impressive.
๐จ๐ญ Here's what stood out:
Dr. Martha Spilioti- Clinical study in glioblastoma patients: survival rates 7.27x higher among those who adhered to a ketogenic diet. The sobering caveat? Patients without family support consistently failed to implement the therapy. That finding alone is worth sitting with.
Caroline Roberts, MD- A decade of Virta Health clinical evidence: ketogenic nutrition consistently outperforming usual care across liver, kidney, cardiovascular, and inflammatory outcomes. 73% reduction in liver complication risk. 40% reduction in new-onset CKD. More than halved MACE-3 cardiac events. At the two-year mark, better results on virtually every measured metabolic marker.
@AKoutnik, Ph.D.- The 175g minimum daily carb recommendation for pregnancy? Not supported by evidence. Fetuses are naturally in ketosis throughout pregnancy โ a metabolic state that appears critical to fetal brain development.
Zsรณfia Clemens- A strict animal-based ketogenic diet, initiated early in Type 1 diabetes, may induce remission and reduce insulin dependence by lowering inflammation, reducing gut permeability, and preserving beta-cell function.
@AdrianSotoMota- BHB and glucose follow opposite circadian rhythms at population scale. Elevated BHB may signal good glucose control in individuals on a ketogenic diet without insulin deficiency or poorly controlled diabetes.
๐ Across every disease field, the same message kept surfacing: those of us who understand what these therapies can do have a responsibility to help shape the food environment and public understanding โ so that patients who need this support most actually have a chance of getting it.
Save this post. Share it with someone who needs to see it.

A new pilot study explored a medically supervised ketogenic diet (MSKD) as an adjunctive treatment for adults with moderate to severe depression.
Over 14 weeks, participants followed a structured ketogenic protocol with dietitian support and ketone monitoring. Eight out of eleven participants completed the intervention.
The results were notable:
๐น Depression scores dropped sharply, with 87.5% of participants reaching remission by week 12
๐น Anxiety and anhedonia improved alongside mood symptoms
๐น Adherence was high, and all completers maintained nutritional ketosis, with blood ฮฒ-hydroxybutyrate levels averaging between 0.7 and 2.0 mmol/L
**๐น**No serious adverse events were reported; side effects were mild and transient
While small and uncontrolled, this study adds to growing evidence that metabolic interventions may meaningfully influence mental health, particularly for individuals who do not fully respond to standard treatments.
Larger randomized trials are needed, but these findings highlight the potential of ketogenic therapy as a safe, feasible adjunct in depression care, and an important area for future psychiatric research.

What if your โnormalโ blood sugar isnโt telling the full story?
Glucose can stay in range while insulin levels rise, masking early metabolic dysfunction.
This article explains why this happens and how ketone levels can provide deeper insight.

Ketogenic diets historically have not been recommended for people with anorexia nervosa (AN), largely because of concerns about weight loss. However, a new feasibility study explored whether a weight-maintaining ketogenic dietary therapy could be safely implemented in adults with AN.
Twenty-two women who were weight-restored or mildly underweight followed a ketogenic diet providing approximately 70% of calories from fat, 20% from protein, and 10% from carbohydrate for 14 weeks. Blood ketones were monitored daily during the first two weeks and weekly thereafter, with a target BHB range of 0.5โ3.0 mmol/L.
Key findings:
๐น 82% (18/22) completed the intervention
๐น 72% of completers no longer met the criteria for diagnosis of AN
๐น 72% of completers achieved depression scores within the normal range
๐น Improvements were also seen in anxiety, self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, and mealtime distress
๐น BMI remained stable, with no clinically significant weight loss
๐น No serious adverse events occurred
This was a small, uncontrolled feasibility study, so the findings should be considered preliminary. However, the results support further investigation of ketogenic therapy as a potential adjunctive approach for anorexia nervosa ๐ฅ

Migraines arenโt โjust headaches.โ They can disrupt your focus, energy, mood, and quality of life.
Because what if it isn't a nervous system problem, but a metabolic one?
@DrElenaGross explores how impaired brain energy metabolism, mitochondrial function, blood sugar instability, and inflammation may all play a role in migraine susceptibility.

๐จ A recent randomized clinical trial compared different weight loss approaches in adults with obesity
In just 3 months, several diets outperformed the classic Mediterranean approach for losing weight:
๐ฅฉ Ketogenic diet: โ3.8 kg (8.3 lbs) greater weight loss
โณ Alternate-day fasting : โ3.1 kg (6.9 lbs) greater weight loss
๐ Late time-restricted eating: โ2.3 kg (5 lbs) greater weight loss
๐ Early time-restricted eating: โ1.22 kg (2.7 lbs) greater weight loss
All diets reduced intake by 600 calories per day, fat loss was highest with mADF and early time-restricted eating, and there were no major changes in lean mass or heart health markers.
๐ Keto and intermittent fasting may lead to greater weight loss than a standard calorie-restricted Mediterranean diet, although long-term results require more study.

Can carbohydrate restriction directly improve beta-cell functionโindependent of weight loss?
In a 12-week randomized controlled trial, adults with type 2 diabetes followed either:
๐ฅ A ketogenic diet (~9% carbohydrate)
๐ A low-fat diet (~55% carbohydrate)
Participants received all foods and met weekly with a dietitian, and the diets were designed to maintain weight in both groups.
The ketogenic diet led to greater reductions in a key marker of beta-cell stress (proinsulin-to-C-peptide ratio, or PICP):
๐ ~56% greater reduction in fasting PICP
๐ ~49% greater reduction in post-challenge PICP
These reductions were associated with improvements in insulin secretion during hyperglycemic clamp testing.
Additionally, body weight remained stable, suggesting that a ketogoenic diet without weight loss may help reduce beta-cell workload.
This study adds to the evidence that lowering carbohydrate intake may support beta-cell function in type 2 diabetes ๐ฅ

Food is more than fuel. It shapes our memories, our relationships, and often our sense of identity.
And when weโre facing serious health challenges, those emotional and cultural connections to food donโt simply disappear; they matter even more.
In this guest blog post, registered dietitian Martha Tettenborn explores how a ketogenic approach can be adapted to support both metabolic health and the human side of eating, especially in the context of cancer and other complex conditions.
