@HailuKebede_ Incredibly heartbroken to hear about the loss of my former UG colleague, Hailish. He was a brilliant, vibrant scholar gone far too soon. Rest in peace, Hailish. You will be deeply missed.
#Op_ed: Fatal Power of Words: Dehumanizing language and conflict analysis in #Ethiopia
Gebre Selassie Araya reflects on a recent dispute between Kjetil Tronvoll, Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies, and Professor Clionadh Raleigh, Director of the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (#ACLED), which has reignited debate over ethics in conflict analysis following Raleigh’s use of the term “cancer” to describe the #TPLF during an ACLED podcast.
He argues that “mass atrocities do not begin with weapons; they begin with words,” noting that dehumanizing terms such as “cancer,” “weeds,” and “gangrene” were widely documented during the #Tigray war and often preceded violence against civilians.
The author emphasizes that “those who analyze conflict must never allow themselves to use the vocabulary of war-makers.”

News: #Tigray Teachers' Association says unpaid salaries pushing teachers into severe hardship, urges national body to intervene
In a letter addressed to the #Ethiopian Teachers’ Association, the association said the prolonged non-payment of salaries has exposed teachers and their families to illness, extreme economic difficulties, and, in some cases, death due to hunger.
The association condemned the withholding of teachers’ salaries, which it attributed to political and ideological disagreements, describing the situation as “an act of extreme injustice” that would be “condemned by history.”
#Nigisti_Gared, President of the Tigray Teachers’ Association , says teachers in the region have repeatedly appealed for the payment of their salaries through written requests and peaceful demonstrations. However, the association said no responsible body has responded adequately to address their grievances.

#Op_ed: Between Resilience and Ruin: Eyewitness testimony on ecological backbones, fragile futures of #Tigray
In this op-ed, Jan Nyssen explores the current state of Tigray following his recent field visit to #Mekelle, Hagere Selam, and the surrounding rural districts. He describes Tigray as a region “suspended between recovery and fragility.”
With formal institutions faltering, residents rely on informal water networks and charcoal for survival, while farmers adapt to soaring costs through traditional manure-spreading.
Nyssen argues that Tigray’s future extends beyond politics, stating, "The key question is therefore not simply whether Tigray can recover politically but whether its environmental-resource systems can continue to sustain society under conditions of prolonged instability and partial isolation."
