We inaugurated Shabeely Resort, one of the flagship projects under the Dine for Generations initiative, which spans 385 hectares. Shabeely is not only a resort, but also a living expression of the rich heritage of the Somali Region, seamlessly blending modern architecture with ancient traditions. This eastern region project, among many others, marks a significant milestone in fulfilling our promise to make Ethiopia one of Africa’s top tourist destinations. The region’s abundant natural landscape, combined with the partnerships forged through Medemer’s endeavour, powerfully demonstrates that Ethiopia is not only a nation that dreams, but one that turns those dreams into reality.

Since there is a lot of talk surrounding Somalia right now, here is a short account of what life was like in Mogadishu over 600 years ago, as recounted by Ibn Battuta.
“… Then we traveled from it by sea for fifteen nights and reached Maqadishū - a city of immense size. Its inhabitants have many camels, of which they slaughter hundreds each day, and they have many sheep as well. The people are strong merchants, and it is there that the cloth attributed to the city is manufactured - cloth unmatched anywhere, and from there it is exported to the lands of Egypt and elsewhere.
Among the customs of the people of this city is that whenever a ship arrives at the anchorage, the small boats go up to it. In each boat there is a group of the city’s young men. Each one brings a covered platter of food and presents it to a merchant on the ship, saying: ‘This is my guest.’ Each of them does likewise, and the merchant does not disembark from the ship except to the house of the young man who has claimed him as a guest...
The Sultan of Mogadishu - whom, as mentioned, they call the Shaykh, was Abū Bakr ibn al-Shaykh ʿUmar. He was originally from the Berber people, spoke the Mogadishu tongue, and knew the Arabic language.
Their food is rice cooked with clarified butter, placed in a large wooden bowl, and on top of it they arrange dishes of kawshān, the relishes of chicken, meat, fish, and vegetables. They cook bananas before they ripen in milk and fresh dairy and set them in a bowl. They place curdled milk in a bowl and add preserved lemons, clusters of pickled pepper, salted and pickled ginger, and grapes, which resembles apples but has a pit. When ripe it is extremely sweet and eaten like fruit; before ripening it is sour like lemons and they preserve it in vinegar. When they eat a bite of rice, they follow it with some of these pickled and salted condiments.
....a single person from Mogadishu eats the amount that a whole group among us would ordinarily eat. They are of extremely large and stout bodies. After we had eaten, the judge left us. We remained three days, and food was brought to us three times a day such is their custom..."
