CVE-2026-60004 in Gitea: CVSS 9.8, and the documented exploit chain from access to fully compromised host runs in about 11 seconds. Recon, kill the competing cryptominer already on the box, fetch an architecture-specific payload, wipe the tracks. Faster than most orgs even open a ticket.

The mechanics: an attacker with plain write access to a repo sends a malicious patch to the diffpatch API, plants an executable Git hook, and runs shell commands as the Gitea service user. Open registration is on by default in most installs, so write access often just means creating an account five minutes earlier.

The advice everywhere is patch to 1.27.1. Do it, but that only helps for servers people remember exist. Self-hosted Git is the classic shadow-infra pattern: someone stands one up for a side project, calls it internal-only in a message that's now three years old, and it quietly falls out of whatever tool tracks your real cloud assets. Two years later it's the least watched service with the most access to your source code and secrets.

CISA's August 28 deadline for federal agencies only means something if the asset list underneath it is actually complete.

Genuinely wondering how many teams rediscover a Gitea box this week that nobody remembers spinning up.
