Nothing beats learning by doing: when diving into a new concept or technology, rather than reading yet another blog post or other resource, try to actually build something with it as quickly as possible. You'll learn much faster and understand the limits and trade-offs.

I agree though that with the new versions and IDE shortcuts doesn't make much sense to keep using it. Hopefully those new Java features get supported by libraries too.
