He also spoke about the responsibilities carried by the mu’adhdhins of earlier generations. Before microphones and loudspeakers, a mu’adhdhin would climb to a high place so that his voice could reach the community. From that position, he might be able to see into people’s homes, meaning that he needed to be trustworthy and careful to guard his gaze.

The mu’adhdhin also had to monitor the prayer times with great precision. During Ramadan, people depended upon his adhān to know when to begin their fast and when to break it. His role therefore required accuracy, attentiveness and a deep sense of responsibility.

Sheikh Ibrahim believed that a beautiful voice must always be accompanied by a sincere intention. He advised mu’adhdhins to regularly read about the virtues and rewards of the adhān, while constantly reminding themselves that their abilities were gifts from Allah.

“A person should remember that all of this is from the grace of Allah. He does not even own his own voice. The voice is from Allah, the ability is from Allah and the performance is from Allah.”

Keeping this awareness within the heart, he said, helps the mu’adhdhin remain sincere and call the adhān for Allah alone.

An adhān of happiness, honour and hope

Sheikh Ibrahim believed that the adhān should be delivered with happiness, joy and honour. It is a call inviting people to stand before Allah, not a call of despair or sorrow.

He referred to the beautiful words of the Prophet to Bilal

«“Bring us comfort through it, O Bilal.”»

To Sheikh Ibrahim, these words captured the spirit of the adhān. It announces the approach of prayer, the believer’s meeting with Allah and an opportunity to find peace and comfort through worship.

He also connected the adhān with the dignity and strength of Islam. When Muslims entered a new land, among the first things they established was the prayer, announced by the voice of the mu’adhdhin.

He therefore encouraged mu’adhdhins to raise their voices with happiness and confidence:

“Raise your voice and rejoice. Everything reached by the voice of the mu’adhdhin the stones, the trees, human beings and the jinn will testify for him on the Day of Judgement.”

Serving the Guests of Allah

Sheikh Ibrahim also spent part of his life serving pilgrims in both Madinah and Makkah. He performed Hajj so many times that, when asked for the exact number, he said he could no longer remember.

Serving the pilgrims held a special place in his heart because they were the Guests of the Most Merciful.

He explained that when a guest visits a person’s home, the host naturally honours them and feels pleased when their family serves them well. If this is how people treat their own guests, then those who travel for Hajj deserve an even greater level of honour and care.

He believed that receiving the sincere duʿā of a pilgrim was itself a tremendous blessing:

“If you serve a pilgrim and they say to you, ‘May Allah grant you success, protect you and reward you with goodness,’ then, Allah willing, their supplication will be answered.”

From beginning to end, Sheikh Ibrahim Al-Madani’s journey was closely connected to the adhān and the Two Holy Mosques. He began calling people to prayer as a 13-year-old boy in the neighbourhood mosques of Madinah. Years later, Allah chose his voice to echo across Masjid al-Haram as people performed ṭawāf around the Kaʿbah.

Yet even after receiving this remarkable honour, his heart remained filled with gratitude and humility:

“Who am I for my voice to be raised in the Sacred Mosque? This was Allah’s choice and a gift from Him.”

May Allah have immense mercy upon Sheikh Ibrahim Al-Madani, forgive his shortcomings and accept his years of service. May every adhān he called, every person he invited towards prayer and every pilgrim he served remain upon his scale of good deeds.

May Allah allow the testimony of tawḥīd that he proclaimed throughout his life to be a light for him in his grave and a means of raising his rank.

Sheikh Ibrahim Al-Madani: A Life Devoted to the Adhān

Sheikh Ibrahim Adel Hamzah Al-Madani was born in the blessed city of Madinah, where he spent the first 43 years of his life. Although Madinah was his birthplace and home for more than four decades, Allah had written for him the extraordinary honour of later becoming a mu’adhdhin in Makkah.

Reflecting on this journey, he once said:

“I spent 43 years of my life in Madinah, but Allah willed that I should become a mu’adhdhin in Makkah. It is an immense blessing, and all praise belongs to Allah.”

His relationship with the adhān began at a remarkably young age. He started calling the adhān in the mosques of his neighbourhood when he was just 13 years old.

Interestingly, his earliest adhāns were performed in the Egyptian style. As he grew older and progressed through secondary school and college, he began calling the adhān in the traditional Madinan style at mosques across Madinah. Although he did not serve as a mu’adhin in Masjid an-Nabawi, the city of the Prophet shaped his voice, style and deep love for the adhān.

Sheikh Ibrahim explained that the Madinan adhān was known for its gentleness, sweetness and emotional depth. It commonly used the Bayāt maqām, with longer melodic phrases and greater vocal ornamentation. He believed this softness reflected the very nature of Madinah and its people.

The Makkan adhān, however, carried a different character. Its phrases were shorter and stronger, with fewer vocal embellishments. It conveyed majesty, power and reverence before the Kaʿbah.

Quoting Sheikh Al-Shaʿrawi Sheikh Ibrahim beautifully summarised the distinction:

“Makkah is majesty, while Madinah is beauty.”

Having grown up in Madinah before becoming a mu’adhdhin in Makkah, Sheikh Ibrahim carried elements of both sacred cities within his voice.

His first adhān in Masjid al-Haram

Among all his memories, none affected him as deeply as the first time he was entrusted with calling the adhān in Masjid al-Haram.

He recalled that he could not sleep the night before. The responsibility weighed heavily upon him as he thought about where his voice would soon be heard.

“I remained awake throughout the night. You are about to call the adhān in the Sacred Mosque. Even a mistake or a cough would make a difference. It was an enormous responsibility.”

He admitted that he was extremely nervous. Nevertheless, he called the adhān and, upon completing it, praised and thanked Allah. At first, he did not fully absorb what had happened.

Later, Sheikh Muhammad Ba Saʿd showed him a video that had been recorded from outside the Haram. In the footage, Sheikh Ibrahim could see thousands of people performing ṭawāf around the Kaʿbah while his voice echoed throughout the Sacred Mosque.

The sight overwhelmed him, and he began to weep intensely.

He described the thoughts that passed through his heart at that moment:

“Who am I for my voice to be raised in the Sacred Mosque? Who am I for the people there to hear my voice? This was Allah’s choice and a gift from Him.”

Despite the honour Allah had given him, his words reflected profound humility:

“There are people whose voices are better than mine, and there are people better than me in righteousness and excellence. But that is the grace of Allah, which He grants to whomever He wills.”

It remained one of the most powerful and unforgettable moments of his life.

How the adhān shaped him

For Sheikh Ibrahim, the adhān was never simply a display of vocal ability. It was a sacred responsibility that required truthfulness, trustworthiness and sincerity.

He explained that a mu’adhdhin raises his voice to proclaim the greatest testimony of truth:

“I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”

For that reason, he believed a mu’adhdhin must himself be honest and trustworthy.
