I do graphics and engine work for games. I also build stupid mtg decks, run short distances slowly, and enjoy trashy reality shows while drinking scotch.
Doing a course that requires me to do a bunch of stuff in a local vm. "Surely this VM will only ever need 2 Gigs of RAM, it'll only be running a shell and a web browser!"
and the universe laughed and laughed and laughed
Going to chat tonight to high school kid who's thinking about studying to be a game developer (and their parents). I have no idea whether they want to be a designer, artist, programmer, etc.
What non-discipline specific info do you wish you had before you started out in games?
I've always been an AI skeptic... but my twitter feed is currently full of artists complaining about Midjourney and programmers complaining about Copilot.
that seems like a pretty solid endorsement of this whole "AI" thing tbh.
My iphone is slowly dying, it got into a state where touching the screen caused it to restart. I needed to google how to hard reset an iphone... which I then tried to do on the iphone that I needed to restart, with obvious results. It took me a minute to realize what I did.
@lokeloski @harriorrihar@kHellstr A company doesn't care where the illustration / music / art et al came from, as long as it fits their brand guidelines and helps them market or sell something. That's where I think future versions of Dall-E (and others) are going to have the largest impact.
@lokeloski @harriorrihar@kHellstr I don't think there's any risk of AI devaluing human created art as a creative medium. But I wonder about the impact on commercial artists (ie: ones who work for a company to produce art used by the company, not professional artists who sell independent creative works)
@JoostDevBlog@flassari There is a perf difference :) stationary lights can be more costly than movable ones (their cost scales with the number of moveable actors they're lighting)
Stationary lights generate per object shadows to better integrate movable actors with static lighting.
@Acerola__t@KostasAAA back when I still had google analytics enabled, it showed that post getting more traffic than the rest of my site combined haha. now I know who to blame!
glad it's helpful though :)
@nothings I hate that I just had to ask myself whether I thought a russian disinformation campaign might be behind a new round of yankee candle reviews. ( Covid seems more likely of course )
