I’m pretty sure this is how my papa has welcomed you into the heavens, please greet him for me. ✊🏼
*This is the first time my papa Andimba Toivo ya Toivo ever met Sam Nujoma in exile in Lusaka, Zambia in 1984.
Rest In Eternal Peace H.E. Dr. Sam Nujoma 🕊️🤍
No aid, no minerals
By Bertha Tobias
"If they don't give us money, let's not give them minerals."
This is the sentiment expressed by South Africa's Mineral Resources Minister, Gwede Mantashe, in response to Donald Trump’s announcement of aid suspension to South Africa in light of the Expropriation Act.
The tit-for-tat geopolitical diplomatic strategy alluded to by Mantashe must not be easily dismissed.
As far back as 2009, legendary Zambian economist Dambisa Moyo warned that Africa’s mental and financial subscription to aid culture, rooted in “liberal sensibilities” which preach that the rich must, unequivocally help the poor, has underdeveloped the continent.

I am deeply saddened by the death of H.E. Dr. Sam Nujoma, Founding President of the Republic of Namibia and one of the heroes of African liberation.
The late First President of Namibia’s life would continue to be celebrated for his heroic leadership of the people of Namibia not only in the fight for independence from colonial rule, but in laying the foundation for a secure, prosperous and democratic nation.
I join the many Africans and others around the world in conveying my condolences to President Nangolo Mbumba and the people of Namibia, his widow, children and the leadership of his SWAPO party.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has paid tribute to Namibia’s Founding President, Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma.
Mahamat described Nujoma as an unwavering revolutionary leader whose legacy extends beyond Namibia to the entire African continent.
"African liberation icon and Namibia’s Founding Father, the continent and indeed the world mourn the passing of one of its most illustrious revolutionary leaders," Mahamat stated.
He commended Nujoma’s steadfast commitment to Namibia’s freedom and African unity, calling him "the epitome of courage" for his relentless pursuit of liberation. "H.E. Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma was the epitome of courage, never wavering from his vision for a free Namibia and a unified Africa," he said.
Mahamat extended heartfelt condolences to Nujoma’s family and the Namibian nation. "We extend our most heartfelt condolences to Founding First Lady H.E. Kovambo Nujoma, his family, and to the government and the people of the Republic of Namibia at this most difficult time."

As neighbours and compatriots, South Africa is united in grief with Namibians who have lost the leader of the Namibian revolution, who is inseparable from our own history of struggle and liberation.
Dr Sam Nujoma was an extraordinary freedom fighter who divided his revolutionary programme between Namibia’s own struggle against South African colonialism and the liberation of South Africa from apartheid.
In exile and on home soil, he led the Ovambo People’s Organisation, the South West Africa People’s Organisation and the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia against the seemingly unshakeable might of colonial and apartheid authorities and forces.
Sam Nujoma inspired the Namibian people to pride and resistance that belied the size of the population.
Namibia’s attainment of independence from South Africa in 1990 ignited in us the inevitability of our own liberation.
President Nujoma’s leadership of a free Namibia laid the foundation for the solidarity and partnership our two countries share today – a partnership we will continue to deepen as neighbours and friends.
We are grateful for the extended lifetime with which Dr Sam Nujoma was blessed and we are grateful for the manner in which he dedicated the many decades of his life to serving his nation.
May his soul rest in peace and may our neighbours find healing in his legacy.
