ok this is INSANE 😭
recently a lab technician at Cornell didn’t want to pay for parking so she walked through a cemetery to get to work.
one day she noticed bees everywhere. brought a jar of them to her boss. turns out there are 5.5 MILLION bees living underground beneath that cemetery. one of the largest aggregations ever recorded. more than 200 honeybee hives worth. three times the population of Manhattan.
they’ve been there since at least 1935. possibly over 100 years.
one of the most insane discoveries in pollinator biology happened because a grad student didn’t want to pay for parking

AJ Lee on her suicide attempt.
“I didn't go through with the attempt however I did book a hotel room to die in because I didn't want my husband to find me.”
“I called the suicide prevention hotline… The man on the other end on of the phone, this man was so patient and so kind. It was the first time in a long time someone had shown me kindness... it was this tiny small act of kindness that literally saved my life.”

Seventy-eight lives are safe today.
But the conditions they were living in before are difficult to comprehend.
When our Animal Law Enforcement team arrived at a home in Lancaster County yesterday, they were met with overwhelming heat, dangerously high ammonia levels, and rooms filled with waste, debris, and trash stacked from floor to ceiling.
The air was harsh, but officers spent hours working through those physically demanding conditions to ensure every animal could be found and brought to safety.
Hidden throughout the home were 78 Ragdoll cats and kittens.
Some were frightened. Some were sick. All were living in conditions no animal should ever have to endure.
With the assistance of the Lancaster Township Police Department, our team carefully removed every cat from the property.
Today, they are receiving forensic examinations, medical care, nutritious food, clean bedding, and something many of them may not have experienced in a very long time - relief.
They are not available for adoption at this time, but soon so many lives will have a chance at a brighter future in those forever, loving homes.
This June, the Pennsylvania SPCA turns 159 years old. Since 1867, we have been showing up for animals in the hardest conditions, on the hardest days. If you'd like to help us continue that legacy, there's no better way than helping these 78 cats right now. Our Day of Giving is June 22, but these animals need care today.
Please consider donating towards their care now.
Meet Edward. After being found as a stray with severe arthritis and spinal deterioration, he was given just six months to live. His family set out to make those months the best of his life.
Then they discovered his obsession with the ice cream truck.
Despite struggling to walk, Edward somehow finds an extra gear whenever he hears the ice cream jingle. What was supposed to be six months has now turned into 27 months and counting.
Every week, he still shows up for his favorite frozen treat, proving that sometimes the strongest motivation in life comes in a waffle cone.
Yesterday someone tried to tell me we're better off without literacy because writing is a means of control. My friend, those who seek your oppression don't want you literate. The ability to read & communicate is our best defense against tyranny. And they're taking it from us.
