Horrific scenes from the streets of Delhi
A helpless woman breaks down in tears, screaming, "I wasn’t even protesting, these police officers are not humans, they are monsters!"

Today - at Jantar Mantar- whatever happened— is totally against democracy. Protest is the right of every citizen to raise voice against injustice. Govt must think and act accordingly. #JantarMantar

To the People of India Who Refuse to Be Silenced,
There are moments in the life of a nation when the mask slips, when the machinery of power reveals, in all its nakedness, just how deeply it fears the people it claims to represent.
Mass curfew. Trains halted. Roads barricaded. Modes of transport shut down. The internet blacked out. Loudspeaker announcements warning people not to join a protest. Peaceful protesters being assaulted and violently detained.
Read that again... Let the sheer absurdity of it sink in!
What sounds like a scene lifted from the pages of a dystopian novel is, for those living through it, a chilling reality. An entire apparatus of power mobilised to prevent ordinary citizens from exercising one of their most fundamental democratic rights: the right to raise their voices, to demand accountability, to stand up and be counted.
When a regime ends up mobilising its entire machinery to silence its people, it reveals not its strength, but the depth of its fear: the fear of a people who have stopped being afraid.
I have often wondered that if the current dispensation can deploy its entire might, its money and its machinery of manipulation to silence a single voice of truth; if it can falsely implicate and persecute our father, Mr Sanjiv Bhatt, on trumped up charges without an iota of evidence, only so that Narendra Modi could never be held accountable for his role in orchestrating the Gujarat Genocide, then imagine how profoundly it must fear the day when thousands upon thousands of voices of truth rise together, against them, demanding accountability.
Today, that day is no longer a distant hope!
To every person who has stepped out onto the streets, to every individual who has refused to surrender their conscience to intimidation, to every voice that has risen despite the threats, the barricades and the fear: Your courage will shake the very foundations of a system that seeks to sustain itself through fear, division and intimidation.
You are reminding those in power that a nation is not their possession. And you are reminding us of something even more profound: fear is not the only inheritance we can pass on to the next generation. Courage is, too!
You give hope to those who defended the soul of this country and languish behind prison walls today for their convictions. You give hope to their families, who’ve been fighting long, lonely battles for justice. You give hope to all those who have watched, helplessly, as the democratic promise of our nation has been battered, its social fabric torn and its people driven apart.
But, above all, you give hope to the ordinary citizen.
To every person who has looked at the fractures in our society and wondered whether this country, so wounded by hatred and division, can ever find its way back to itself.
You are telling them, that it can!
That India is not beyond repair. That the promise of this nation has not been extinguished. That beneath the din of propaganda, beyond the walls of intimidation, and underneath the suffocating weight of injustice, the conscience of India is still alive.
For decades, our father, Mr Sanjiv Bhatt and countless others fought this lonely battle for justice and democracy, paying an unbearable price for standing by their convictions. They fought when the odds were overwhelming, when solidarity was scarce, when speaking out carried a terrible personal cost, and when standing by one's convictions meant losing one's freedom.
They fought when the fight was lonely.
They endured when the world looked away.
There were moments when, as daughter, I would wonder whether a society that abandoned its defenders deserved their sacrifices.
But watching India's youth take to the streets, fearlessly demanding justice, accountability and their fundamental rights, you have restored my faith in the people of this country.
The institutions meant to protect our democracy have too often faltered. Sections of the media have abandoned their duty to question power. Yet, where institutions have failed, you have found the courage to stand.
The system may have failed us, but you, the youth will not fail the country!
If our father were free today, he would be walking alongside you, shoulder to shoulder, on the front lines, not as a spectator, but as a comrade in arms. But though he cannot walk beside you, the ideals for which he stands live on in your courage.
When I see you all, I see the hope that the sacrifices of our father, Mr Sanjiv Bhatt, Umar Khalid, Gauri Lankesh, and countless others will not be erased by the passage of time, buried beneath propaganda or rendered meaningless by injustice. Their stories are a reminder of the price that truth-telling can exact. Your courage is a reminder that the values for which people suffer can continue to inspire those who come after them.
History will remember this moment, not simply for the thousands who took to the streets, but for what their presence represented. For the young people who refused to accept that silence was the price of safety. For the citizens who chose solidarity over indifference. For those who stood up, not because victory was guaranteed, but because surrendering their principles was unthinkable.
For generations to come, let it be remembered that there were people who refused to abandon their country to despair. People who dared to reclaim the democratic space that belongs to every citizen. People who insisted that education must liberate, that justice must be impartial, that constitutional rights must mean something in practice, and that a better future cannot be built upon fear, hatred and enforced silence.
And let it be remembered that, when the hour demanded courage, the youth stepped up.
History has repeatedly shown us that no arrangement of power, however entrenched, can forever extinguish the human longing for freedom, dignity and justice.
And today, in you, I see that struggle finding new life...You are not merely protesting the present. You are fighting for the soul of India's future.
An India where dissent is not a crime, where justice is not a privilege, where constitutional rights are not empty promises, and where no one must pay for the courage to speak the truth with their freedom.
Today, you have reminded us that India is not beyond redemption, that its conscience is not dead, and that its future need not be surrendered to fear.
Do not underestimate what that means...
Do not underestimate what your courage means to the political prisoners and defenders of society languishing behind prison walls, to the families waiting for justice, to the citizens who have nearly lost faith, or to the generations who will inherit the country you help shape today.
You may not see the full measure of what you have set in motion. You may not witness every fruit of your labour. But the courage you demonstrate today will become the inheritance of tomorrow!
And that is how change begins … not always with an immediate victory, not always with the fall of a wall, but with ordinary people discovering that they do not have to accept the world as it is.
The road ahead is, and will not be easy. But darkness, however deep, has never made the dawn impossible.
More power to you ... May your courage endure, your solidarity grow, and your struggle bring us closer to the India our Constitution promised us!
With unwavering solidarity and all our support...Always!

We have seen the OHCHR’s remarks about today’s events in New Delhi.
India is the world’s largest democracy, where the right to peaceful assembly is guaranteed by our Constitution and safeguarded by robust institutions, an independent judiciary and a free media. As in every democracy, Indian citizens exercise this right subject to reasonable restrictions in the interest of public order. The authorities, for their part, act in accordance with the law, and our courts remain available to all for redressal of any grievances.
The OHCHR’s concerns are therefore misplaced and constitute an unwarranted interference in the internal affairs of India.
In this context, OHCHR would also do well to devote comparable attention to large-scale protests elsewhere, consistent with its mandate of impartiality and non-selectivity.

#India: We are concerned by reports of mass detentions of demonstrators, protest leaders, members of civil society organisations, lawyers and journalists, before and during today’s large-scale demonstrations in Delhi.
We call on the authorities to ensure that the right to peaceful assembly is fully respected and fulfilled.
