"Do not tell us to 'vote harder'. We did. Missouri voted for the elimination of dark money, a higher minimum wage, protection of labor unions, expansion of healthcare.
And the far-right MO state legislature simply said: 'Your votes don't count' and passed none of it."
Pre-Roe, I was 8 yrs old. I came home from school to find my Mom lying in a puddle of blood. She was weak & asked me to call a neighbor. She was miscarrying, but the embryo would not abort. For 48 hours, she bled while doctors transfused blood, waiting. Abortions were illegal.
i keep seeing the same fucking tweets about americans unwilling to sacrifice and 50 cents a gallon is a minor inconvenience and I assume you've never had to choose between paying the electric bill or eating that week.
On any given day, there are 600,000+ frozen embryos housed in fertility clinics and labs across the US. All it takes to dispose of or donate one is signing a form. No interference, shaming, protests, or terrorists. Never say this is about life and not women's freedom.
Today, I paid over $1000 out of pocket for my miscarriage. They didn't tell me it would cost so much to lose a baby. Here are other things they don't tell you about miscarriages. A thread based on my experience. CW: miscarriage & infertility.
I hate this. I hate what we’re doing to each other. 18 months in, and I feel like the pandemic — and the protracted, costly selfishness that seems rampant — has pushed me to a point of cruelty I didn’t know I had in me. I’m angry and sad and bitter. This isn’t who I want to be.
🧵 I want to share more about what I witnessed at Rikers Island yesterday. We broke into groups to inspect different parts of the sprawling facility. I spent several hours at the Otis Bantum Correctional Center.
2021 continues to be a master class in Ruth Gilmore’s concept of “organized abandonment” i.e. the decades-long project of disinvestment in life-giving systems (healthcare, housing, education, etc) and investment in death-dealing ones (policing, incarceration, surveillance, etc).
🧵 We have sacrificed so much for you over these past 18 months.
And it took only 3 days for you to destroy one of the last things I was hanging onto - the ability to keep my kids safe.
A big fear, more than for my own safety caring for hospitalized COVID patients, was … 1/
@GinaKCUR Thats such good insight! The adrenaline that made all of this possible at the beginning of the pandemic is long gone, no additional structural supports have been added, and the chronic stress is leading to serious burnout.
On the exact same day the Missouri State Senate goes to special session trying to take away birth control on the FRA, Judge rules against 53% of Missourians who voted to expand Medicaid.
Missouri is one step from falling over the edge.
Vote. Republicans. Out.
