A woman has been killed in another domestic violence killing. Aged in her 50s, the woman was found dead in her home at Russell Lea in Sydney today.
Her male housemate, who it is understood to have only lived in the home for three weeks, is in police custody. She is the 45th Australian woman lost to violence this year.
While nothing can reduce the impact of her death, at least now authorities are widening the term 'domestic violence' to include violence perpetrated by housemates and other co-habitators where an intimate or familial relationship does not - or did not previously - exist. Redefining the definition of domestic violence is necessary as women victims would otherwise fall through the domestic and family violence homicide data collection points.
Needless to say, the ongoing slaughter of women - whether it is in their homes or public spaces and whether it is by family, intimate partners, strangers or associates - continues to be Australia's number one social justice problem. There is an epidemic of violence against women and too many of us are paying the ultimate price for what is ultimately preventable.
