On this day, October 16, 1859, we remember the raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia) a two-day attempt to initiate an armed revolt against the institution and economy of chattel slavery in Southern states by taking over the U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry.

"I...am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with Blood." wrote militant abolitionist John Brown on the day he was executed for his raid on Harpers Ferry.

Brown took the arsenal & forces under Robert E. Lee, which included JEB Stuart & Thomas (Stonewall) Jackson, defeated Brown & recovered the arsenal two days later.
