An Open Letter to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory
Sir,
You are a public servant. That is the beginning and the end of what you are. As a public servant you are subject to the laws that govern your office and you answer to the Nigerian people, and to no one else. Everything you do, every day you sit in that chair, is done in the service of the Nigerian people. Not in the service of yourself. Not in the service of your ego. Not in the service of whoever you have decided is your enemy this week.
But you have become intoxicated by the power of your offices. You are addicted to the spotlight. You can no longer be yourself. You talk too much. You boast. You threaten. You insult. And you do all of it on camera, for the whole world to hear and to see.
Sir, you are committing suicide in public. You are your own worst enemy. You are digging your own grave with your own mouth, and you are doing it live on television.
I have been around a long time. I have met and seen a great many powerful Nigerians, from the days when the British still ran the country, through the very first Prime Minister, through the soldiers and the civilians who followed. I did my National Service in the National Assembly and in the offices of President Shagari. I sat close enough to power to know how it smells. I have never come across a character such as yourself. Not one. Not even Umaru Dikko was as bad as you, and we all know what happened to him. A crate at Stansted Airport is not a metaphor. It is history.
You know exactly who I am and what I represent. My father sat down with General Gowon in 1967 to create Rivers State. His law chambers in Lagos served as the office of the first Governor when Rivers State existed on paper and nowhere else. You know this. The state you now treat as your personal estate was built by men who never once shouted about it.
So I tell you as a fellow son of Rivers State, not as an enemy: get help. Stop drinking. Stop making unnecessary enemies. Get off your high horse. Pray to God for forgiveness. And resign your office before your enemies kill you. I say this plainly because nobody around you will. The people around you are paid to say yes. I am not.
Public office is a loan from the people. It is not a throne, not a stage and not a weapon. Every man who forgot that in this country has paid for it, one way or another, and the bill always arrives.
Enough is enough.
Yours sincerely,
Kio Amachree
