Many of UMass Amherst’s black students received a violently hateful, racist, and threatening email. UMass has condemned the anonymous senders and hired a cybersecurity firm to investigate further. Due to school emails being public … #rucrisiscom
this was unfortunately difficult to prevent, and I do believe the administration’s response has been sufficient for now as they continue to trace the perpetrators. The impact however is lasting and many students now feel unsafe or unwelcome on their campus…
@garrettjordan99#dcim353b I like your point about disruption not always being bad. Many disruptive technologies have been extremely useful and have altered the way our society functions.
@whitneyv4 I think this is super interesting. There’s a lot more surveillance software out there that we don’t necessarily think about in our everyday lives, but through technology, companies and gov. can track us. #dcim353b
My main takeaway from this class is that technology isn’t what we often think it is. Tech isn’t JUST a laptop or a robot, it can be medicine or a train or basically anything. #DCIM353b
@achintya11singh I think this is super interesting. It’s easy to blame technology and algorithms for being invasive, but we need to remind ourselves that humans create these algorithms. #DCIM353B
@garrettjordan99 This is a really interesting idea. There’s probably a lot of research out there that shows the correlation between social media and people’s emotions/actions and how it affects people psychologically. #DCIM353B
@mike_vargas14 I agree. It’s important to tie that into the broader issue of fake news on the internet / the tv. That is a very relevant topic since the events of this year inspired many to become more political, but the coronavirus forced us to stay home and only communicate online. #DCIM353B
The concept of digital activism and its limitations, as well as the power of hashtags, could be useful / interesting if anyone’s topic is related to social media! (from week 9’s new york times article) #DCIM353b
@maxdangelo99 Hi Max,
This is a great point because how tech has affected the economy is probably a common issue people will be discussing in their papers. I’m sure there’s plenty of material linking tech and the economy, especially if someone’s topic has to do with coronavirus. #DCIM353b
@sarahedoherty99 Hi Sarah, I definitely think the idea of increased surveillance is really intriguing and it is likely relevant to many different paper topics. It’s a good example to keep in mind because it has both positive and negative effects on the public. #DCIM353b
@Sabit_15 I agree. Social media and other technologies that facilitate socialization (like Zoom) have become crucial to society. They are extremely relevant now due to the lack of face-to-face interaction in quarantine, but they have other uses that should be explored. #DCIM353b
In “The coronavirus pandemic is boosting the big tech transformation to warp speed”, the idea of “market society” is explained. It refers to data that is gathered and then utilized, just like an algorithm. I’m sure this is will be relevant for some topics! #DCIM353b
@IsaacSYoon1 This seems really interesting! It’s a very broad topic which will help you write a lengthy paper, as well as focus on numerous different aspects of the internet. #dcim353b
@ericccaa_ TikTok has definitely changed our understanding of social media, and has been revolutionary for us and younger generations. I think that it is a really great topic! #dcim353b
@Griggzeee That is a really interesting topic! With facial recognition technology being implemented in iPhones and many other forms of household tech, it is very important to understand the capacity at which it can help or hurt. #dcim353b
