Most Kenyans do not struggle with a lack of intelligence. We struggle with emotional conditioning.

From childhood, many of us are taught to react before we question, defend before we understand, and choose what feels right over what is demonstrably true.

Politics, tribal identity, religion, social status, family expectations and even social media reinforce this conditioning.

We are constantly exposed to messages designed to trigger fear, anger, pride, outrage or belonging because an emotional person is often easier to mobilize than a rational one.

That is why you can present someone with facts, evidence and sound reasoning, and instead of engaging with the argument, they attack the person who made it.

Not necessarily because the argument is wrong, but because it makes them uncomfortable.

When an idea threatens someone's identity, worldview or emotional attachment, the brain can treat that idea almost like a threat. Reasoning becomes defensive. We stop asking, “Is this true?” and start asking, “How does this make me feel?” or “Who is saying it?”

And this is how societies become reactive.

We confuse criticism with hatred. Disagreement with disrespect. Accountability with persecution. Facts with propaganda. And uncomfortable truths with attacks.

The problem is that reality does not negotiate with our feelings.

You can make an emotional decision, defend it passionately and surround yourself with people who validate it. But when the consequences eventually arrive, reality will still collect its debt.

The truth may hurt you today. But refusing to accept it can hurt you far more tomorrow.

Emotional comfort is temporary. Consequences are not.

Perhaps one of the most important things we need to teach ourselves is this: before asking whether something offends us, we should first ask whether it is true.
