I don’t care how unwoke this makes me sound I’ve thought this for years . So many people exacerbate real problems by entering a psychosomatic feedback loop that makes them feel way worse than whatever condition they have
lately i’ve been doing what i like to call evil CBT where i look in the mirror and say things like “you're not special enough to be the ugliest person in the world” and it works better than the regular kind for me honestly
Yesterday, we lost a cherished member of our family.
We got Sunny at the start of our second term in the White House, and all of us – including our first dog, Bo – immediately fell in love. We also had trouble keeping up with her, for Sunny was a force of nature. Athletic and full of boundless energy, she leapt over the hedges on the South Lawn like they weren’t even there, chasing squirrels, birds and anything else that moved. And whereas the way to Bo’s heart usually involved a treat, Sunny was more interested in having us run around with her, roll on the floor with her, or have her belly rubbed for as long as we were willing.
She loved the girls, even if they were pestering her when she was napping. She loved our team, and would often follow them around, helping them on the job. She was fiercely protective of Bo, who she rightly sensed wasn’t always as alert and attentive as she was. She had her eccentricities: other than Bo, she preferred people to dogs; she was a loud and sloppy drinker; and despite being a Portuguese Water Dog, she hated getting wet.
But as far as our family was concerned, she was pretty much perfect, and for thirteen years, she would be by our side – always loyal, always sweet, always ready for adventure, still fiery and gorgeous till the very end of her days.
We will miss her terribly, and imagine she’s with her big brother now, making sure he’s okay.
five vultures contemplating a barely-conscious slow-ebbing-but-still-breathing carcass with avid interest. you see it often in the woods, less often in public places.
You can’t understand full blown psychosis until someone you love and knew in a non-psychotic state has it. It’s not like “them but crazy” it’s like a completely different person. Decisions they’d never make. Impulses they’ve never had. Views they’d be disgusted by. Things they’d never say. Judging someone in that state is a fundamental misunderstanding of their illness.
While we wait for the jury in the Lindsay Clancy case, I have one request for journalists, podcasters, media outlets, and social media sites that have followed this trial: whatever verdict ultimately comes in the horrific and brutal killing of three beautiful children, step away from the arguments about guilt, innocence, and criminal responsibility for just 10 minutes and read what I have known for years in my justice file editorial linked below.
Massachusetts has a dark history in the way it has treated people, or actually not treated people, with mental illness and disabilities that continues to this very day.
When the jury's work is finished, ours should begin.
Whatever the verdict, Massachusetts must confront what this trial has revealed and demand meaningful changes to a mental health system that has failed vulnerable people and their families for generations. I've watched it fail from the vantage point of my courtroom.
In the meantime, my thoughts and prayers are with Cora, Dawson, and Callan.

procrastination is often an attempt to avoid disappointment
the underlying question is "what if I can't be who I need to be?" and until that question is answered, there's constant resistance to doing the work
