the prof who created my russian course started out as a math major at my university (like me), took russian cuz the math dept. encourages learning one of french, german, or russian (like me), and ended up quitting math to get a phd in russian & teach it full time… i’m so scared.

I was going to take French in high school, but the beginning French class was at the same time as the advanced math class I tested into. I got told to choose, so I chose math and took Latin instead.

12 years later, I am now a Latin teacher.

I am around undergraduates and this is very true on average. Also, a lot of male college athletes at elite universities lean moderate to RW and just don’t speak about it, but have high openness to opposing viewpoints because they need to adapt to survive college. They typically major in Econ, Finance, Pre-Law etc. and keep to themselves, but the few who do serious coursework in the ‘great books’ end up being some of the most engaged students in the classroom for this reason…

As somebody with a math degree, I'm frequently told I must be very smart, even though studying math doesn't make me any smarter than people who studied any other subject. I suspect that something similar happens with doctors and that's why so many are *like that*.

A few nights ago I got in the hotel elevator and hit 7 and this massive man got on and hit 6 and then when it opened on 6 the doors opened and he said “actually on 7” and then using my true crime training i waited till the last second and jumped out on 6 and said “actually im on 6” and he shouted “what you are on six?” But the door closed. So I ran down the stairs to 5 to avoid him then texted my partner to come get me.

i read “top founder” as an idiosyncratic way of referring to early 20th century topologists whose work developed much of the field so imagine my horror when i zoomed in on the chalkboard
