Punch is a male,
born July 26, 2025.
He is a little over 1.
Japanese macaque males
mature at 4 to 6.
What you see now
is not mating.and

On camera,
tongue or mouth-to-mouth
looks like a French kiss.
In macaques it is usually:

Lip-smacking
Lips open and close fast.
The tongue may show.
Meaning: no threat,
hello, comfort,
come play.
Mouthing
Nose and mouth
close to the other’s face.
A sniff,
or a light press.

It comes with hugging,
grooming, and play.
Macaque infants
use this face signal
from the first days of life.
Why he still does it
a lot with the girls:
No mother from the start.
Hand-raised.

He joined the troop
on January 19, 2026.
He missed the face time
a baby usually learns
in a mother’s arms.
So he still checks bonds
through contact.
Females hold the troop.
A young male stays close
to kind females
to get groomed,
learn the rules,
and stay safer
from the big males.
The girls accept him
more often than the boys do.
This age is still practice.
Hug, mount, face contact.
Not breeding.
Troop manners.

because he is in love.
He is a late-to-the-troop
little male
making peace
and tying bonds.
