Ryu died at just 6 years old. 🕊
The only reason he survived as long as he did was because of Goron and Otome protecting him.💙

For 6 years Ryu was bullied, attacked, injured, removed from the troop, treated, then placed back again and again in repeated attempts to reintegrate him. Every time he was removed, he became more of a stranger to the troop when he returned. And eventually Akira would target him again. In the end, those injuries cost him his life.🕊

Nanako was also hand-reared. She struggled to fit into the troop too. Constant fights, removals, reintegration attempts… over and over. Eventually she lost fear of humans and began attacking people. After years of suffering injuries from the troop, Nanako was finally removed. Today she lives alone at Ichikawa Zoo. She survived because intervention finally happened.

So why couldn’t Ryu have been permanently removed too? He might still be alive today.

Otome’s success made people believe every hand-reared macaque would eventually fit in. But Ryu failed. Nanako failed. Every hand-reared male failed. Out of the 6 hand-reared macaques, only the remaining females are still alive today.

So why can’t Punch be rehoused?
Why can’t he live separately?
Why can’t a smaller group of younger macaques be introduced instead?
