@CiccaAndre@stalman@aguyinyellow Except AVIF isn't useful in a creative workflow like JPEG XL is. You can capture in lossless JPEG XL, edit, and deliver the in smallest size in a single format.
@aguyinyellow@stalman Honestly because HEIF is so far behind, we didn't even really bother with it. HEIC files off the iPhone are 4:2:0 and limited to 10-bit.
@cotneit@stalman I think you’re going to be impressed. It’s faster than the alternatives and is highly parallelizable. This is in MPx/s on a M3 Pro. Faster than old-timey progressive JPEG with enough cores!
New JPEG XL community website just dropped: https://t.co/yIz6j0RNn1
Huge thanks to the folks at Fractional Xperience (https://t.co/GJpQm9usIY) who pulled this off!
Hey @t3dotgg, you're making some claims about the decode speed of JPEG XL being a problem, in a video you just uploaded (https://t.co/PDvzQsqQog). Please take a look at these speed measurements. For still images on the web any of the codecs are fast enough. It's not a real issue.
A friend working with JPEG XL sent me their new logo and it sounds like they have a new website in the works too, just as rumors drop that it will be available on the next iPhone.
Images a fraction the size with faster encode/decode and proper legacy support? Yes please 🙌
@stalman This should really propel great imagery on the web forward in a way HEIF, WebP and AVIF haven't & can’t. @googlechrome hope you’re paying attention.
@stalman It’s embarrassing how bad some of the details in the text are. It’s your tech illiterate 75 y.o. uncle trying to describe something he clearly doesn't understand. There is lots they could go after Apple for, but this doesn't seem like it…
@stalman Instead of forcing the 75¢ worth of extra RAM for $300, I'd happily pay an extra $1,000 for a higher resolution, better performing screen… That’s an axis they should be going after.
I think it is time to ask Chromium folks to re-evaluate jpeg xl after Apple added support and Adobe is even building future formats (Digital Negative) on jpeg xl. One possibility to ask this is to star this bug.

If you think monochromatic colors of the iPhones (black, grey, white) are boring, check out car sales by color.
From a business standpoint, Apple is killing it.
