Texas barbecue joints are closing due to skyrocketing beef prices, particularly brisket, which is a staple on the menus. Inflation, tariffs and labor shortages all play a role.
Even the state's most celebrated restaurants are struggling to remain open. https://t.co/l2lYkI1tg2
My latest recap on primary election results for utility regulators in the Southeast - especially my home state of Alabama. It was...not great if you are an incumbent overseeing rate increases: https://t.co/5HSXLRfyRZ
SCOOP: DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin told travel executives that he’s serious about curbing international flights to U.S. airports in cities with “sanctuary” policies, which could force airlines to re-route and inflict economic pain, @NickMiroff reports. https://t.co/CKa5W3aWyY
Safe to say there’s a prevailing “You break it, you buy it” sentiment among GOP strategists toward Trump-world when it comes to Paxton. Somebody is going to have to put up the money to keep Texas red, and a lot of eyes are going to turn to the $350 million in MAGA Inc.
BREAKING: The Trump administration announces a $1.7 billion fund to compensate prosecuted allies after dropping a lawsuit against the IRS. https://t.co/2kh5VINHpl
Just for the record, Rehnquist's SCOTUS ruled in 2002 that these kinds of clauses and disqualification based on candidates voicing their beliefs was unconstitutional.
A conservative majority ruled this, with Clarence Thomas in favor!
This x 100. More Alabamians are identifying as independent. Conservative leaning but completely fed up with the Alabama GOP. People are feeling disconnected and apathetic about their politicians.
Despite having an office of hundreds of attorneys, Ken Paxton has frequently opted for private lawyers — many to whom he has personal or political ties — to argue on behalf of Texas.
One attorney cost taxpayers more than $24,000 for a day’s work.

BREAKING:
It's official. The Trump DOJ just confirmed the creation of a $1.776 billion slush fund that can be used to pay Trump allies who claim they've been wrongfully targeted by the Biden admin's ‘weaponization' — including, reportedly, Jan. 6 insurrectionists.

From 2022-2026, Florida:
-banned more books than any other state
-grew its unaccountable private voucher program to largest in US
Speaker of the TN House Cameron Sexton just removed me and every Democrat — and therefore every Black elected official in the state legislature from any committee we served on.
This move strips nearly 2 million Tennesseans from the representation they deserve in TN state leg.
Wasting no time, @GovernorKayIvey has called a special primary election for the AL-1, AL-2, AL-6 & AL-7 under the legislatively-enacted map from 2023. Those are the districts that changed back.
Election will be Tuesday, August 11. No runoff.

Alabama asked the Supreme Court for permission to abandon court-ordered maps and go back to using ones the Court ruled were in violation of the Voting Rights Act, just three years ago, in the wake of Callais. Today, the Supreme Court said yes. https://t.co/5k2Wu1FvZs
In short - SCOTUS is allowing Alabama to use a map which was found to intentionally dilute Black voters because...who knows. Majority does not bother to explain its reasoning after Alito *insisted* Callais didnt affect this case, b/c it involved an additional constitutional claim
The Supreme Court just tossed out any claim, what ever dubious ones remained, of legitimacy out the window. They literally ruled that Alabama violated the VRA and ordered a second district be drawn. Now they’re overturning their own decision for what reason you ask? Because they felt like it.
