Some apologies are too heavy for any human heart to carry.

A few days ago, on the twenty-first anniversary of their wedding, Mohammed Diab wrote a message to his wife.

That was not a love letter or an apology.

He told her he was sorry that he could not get her out of Gaza to receive the treatment that might have saved her life.

Imagine reaching your twenty-first wedding anniversary only to spend it counting chemotherapy sessions instead of memories, waiting for scan results instead of making plans for the years ahead.

Today, those results arrived.

The chemotherapy is no longer working, the breast cancer has spread to her lungs.
And to her bones.

Breast cancer is one of the cancers that modern medicine can often treat successfully.

But in Gaza, even treatable diseases can become death sentences when patients are denied timely care, essential medicines, and the chance to leave for treatment.

There is a grief greater than watching someone you love die.

It is watching them die while knowing they might have lived.

We managed to enter the Israeli kill zone in the Nur Shams refugee camp in the West Bank.

This is the location of perhaps the most forgotten humanitarian catastrophe in Palestine. The residents were expelled by the IDF in January 2024, and have been unable to return since, making them refugees twice.

Nur Shams, Tulkarem and Jenin Refugee Camps are now essentially training grounds for the Israeli army, while they continue to terrorise the refugees in the nearby villages.
