🎙️ Dr. Abigail Marsh @aa_marsh enlightens us with #TheFearFactor. From #altruists to #psychopaths, she reveals the emotions that define us. An insightful read from Georgetown University's shining star in psychology. 📘🧠 Listen now! 🎧 https://t.co/nPlIlW0OJG
Placing a higher value on the welfare of others distinguishes real-world altruists. Unsurprisingly, effective interventions in this area will pose a challenge for the field. Thanks @shawnrhoadsphd for leading one of my favorite LSAN projects!
In prior work, we found that one of the features best distinguishing real-world extraordinary altruists from controls is their reduced social discounting:

Neural responses underlying this pattern had not been examined until now
🎉Thrilled to share I was awarded the 2023 Harold N. Glassman Distinguished Dissertation Award in the Social Sciences by @Georgetown
Thank you to all of my colleagues that made my dissertation work possible. Special thanks to my advisor, @aa_marsh, and collaborator, @seygreena
Out now in @NatureComms! 🎉
6 populations of real-world extraordinary altruists are best distinguished from typical adults by their unusually unselfish traits & decision-making patterns

New findings about extraordinary altruists' religious beliefs and beliefs in other people by @PaigeAmormino@kmo5128@KrutiVekaria and @ELRobertson16. Altruists are mainly distinguished by being less likely to believe other people can be truly evil. https://t.co/kf9W0ZJ62g
The @DCPoliceDept is #hiring a Data Scientist to help inform and evaluate DC's public safety services. Put your data analytic and scientific methods skills to good use!

Out in @AffectScience this week! New paper by @kmo5128 using computational behavioral modeling to quantify variation in empathic sensitivity using go/no-go social reinforcement learning. 1/
@LCHeathcote@a2cps_pain @massihmoayedi @kren27@laurenatlas@Geha_Paul @SBurnettHeyes Fascinating! I’m surprised about the ceiling effects in teens. We found it important to have subjs arms hang flat against the wall (not touching thighs), which is not always well documented in the literature -- adds to the difficultly of comparing times between studies currently.
When COVID shut down #painresearch in labs, Katie O'Connell took her studies online with innovative #pain testing in subjects via zoom. Great talk today in the Human Pain Series hosted by @massihmoayedi and discussion from @kren27@laurenatlas@Geha_Paul https://t.co/Aq3SKAXkSb
📢📢 Check out our newest preprint on individual differences in social reinforcement learning. We report that antisociality is associated with reduced sensitivity to losing money for a study partner.

We identified 3 conceptually and motivationally coherent types of prosocial decisions: cooperation, equity, and altruism.
Meta-analytic results across 43 fMRI studies (1423 subjects) further supported this: each prosocial decision type recruited largely different neural regions.
Wonderfully insightful plenary by George Koob for @SIPSPlacebo today. Neatly bridged topics from addiction to pain to conditioning to social isolation and allostasis. WOTD is #hyperkatifeia - hypersensitivity to emotional distress especially during drug withdrawal #SIPS2021
📌 #SANS2021 come on by my virtual poster booth later today (5:45pm EST / 2:45pm PST) on emotion recognition after right-hemisphere stroke. 2-E-116 https://t.co/6a21yPD6k8
