@MAWKVLT people didn't like DE because it was political, or because it was top down and heavily text based, or even because of the artstyle or setting, necessarily. the writing was the real secret sauce and imitators haven't approached that level in anything i've seen

@MAWKVLT Kurvitz and his team were also just supremely talented writers. not to say all imitations are *bad*, but Kurvitz & co. were just on a different level that could pull you into an otherwise mechanically shallow experience, and that talent was a large chunk of DE's core appeal
