Yesterday, President Trump said that the US will ask Europe to repay the money the US spent on Ukraine.

My thoughts on that:

First and foremost, the people of Ukraine are deeply grateful to the United States for all the assistance provided!

Indeed, Ukraine has received real and massive military assistance from the United States - $67.8 billion in committed defense articles and services: over 10,000 Javelin systems, over 3,000 Stingers, dozens of HIMARS, Patriot, and NASAMS systems, Abrams tanks, Bradley and Stryker fighting vehicles, howitzers, and millions of artillery shells.

Part of the U.S. assistance was provided as non-repayable grants. Aid to Ukraine also included U.S. defense spending and orders placed with American industry. The cost of aid to Ukraine and the economic and security benefits for the U.S. existed simultaneously.

First, the U.S. did not transfer $195 billion to Ukraine. This figure represents the total budgetary framework of the U.S. response to the war, which includes not only weapons and financial aid to Ukraine, but also U.S. troops in Europe, the replenishment of U.S. military stockpiles, purchases from its own military-industrial complex, logistics, and agency operations. As of March 31, 2026, out of $195 billion, $177.8 billion had been obligated and $116 billion actually disbursed. Moreover, roughly $4.2 billion within this system already came from allies via the PURL, PURL, rather than from the American taxpayer.

Second, nearly $50 billion of this amount was not aid to Ukraine at all - it was U.S. spending on its own troops in Europe. This includes EUCOM, the European Deterrence Initiative, troop deployments, transport, logistics, infrastructure, and sustaining the U.S. military presence. These were real U.S. budget expenditures caused by the war, but Ukraine never received these funds. Presenting them as an American "gift to Ukraine" that Europe must now compensate for is incorrect.

Third, nearly $46 billion more was allocated to replenish the U.S.’s own arsenals. The U.S. provided weapons to Ukraine from its own stockpiles, after which the Pentagon received funds to replace them. In effect, Ukraine might have received an older system, while new budget funds went to American manufacturers to produce new weapons for the U.S. As a result, these expenditures simultaneously funded the rearmament of the U.S. military and the operations of American factories.

In other words, tens of billions of dollars in military assistance did not go directly to Ukraine - they were converted into defense contracts inside the United States. Through USAI, new systems, ammunition, and military services for Ukraine are funded through manufacturers. Through replenishment, U.S. companies produce replacements for what the Pentagon transferred to Ukraine. The beneficiaries include Lockheed Martin, RTX, General Dynamics, Boeing, BAE Systems, Oshkosh, AM General, AeroVironment, L3Harris, and a large network of suppliers.

Fourth, the United States gained just corporate revenue from this spending, but also new production capacity. Funds went toward expanding production of 155mm ammunition, PAC-3 MSE, GMLRS, Javelins, and other systems. The war exposed shortages in the U.S. military-industrial complex while at the same time providing the Pentagon with funding to address them. In other words, part of the assistance to Ukraine became an investment in America’s own defense industrial base.

Fifth, direct transfers of money to the Ukrainian government were far smaller than the political claims about "hundreds of billions." The largest block of direct budget support amounted to around $30 billion and was provided mainly through the World Bank for civilian expenditures - salaries for Ukrainian teachers and medical workers, pensions, and social payments. There were also humanitarian, energy, and economic programs. This was real financial assistance to Ukraine. But that is precisely why it should be distinguished from the tens of billions spent by the Pentagon inside the United States.

Sixth, the narrative that America was paying instead of Europe does not reflect the scale of European assistance. The EU and its member states estimate their total support for Ukraine and Ukrainians at more than €220 billion. According to U.S. accounting, the United States committed $67.8 billion in military assistance, while total security assistance from allies and partners amounted to around $130 billion. The accounting methodologies differ, so these figures should not be mechanically compared dollar for dollar. But they certainly do not show a situation in which America paid while Europe did not.

Seventh, Europe is already financing American weapons for Ukraine. Through PURL, allies transfer funds to the United States for the supply of the American weapons to Ukraine and for the replenishment of American stockpiles.

By March 2026, the figure was already approximately $4.2 billion. And in the first half of 2026, European donors purchased at least €3 billion worth of weapons for Ukraine from U.S. defense companies. In other words, part of the current system literally works in the opposite direction: European money → the U.S. military-industrial complex → weapons for Ukraine.

Yes, the United States provided aid to Ukraine, but not as some enormous free transfer made in place of Europe. In reality, Ukraine received critically important assistance for which we will remain grateful, Europe spent vast sums of its own money, and a significant share of U.S. spending remained inside the United States itself - in the form of new weapons, replenished stockpiles, a strengthened military presence, and multibillion-dollar contracts for the U.S. military-industrial complex.

Chinese researchers have developed the best shortest-path algorithm in 41 years!

Dijkstra’s Algorithm has been the undefeated king of the shortest path for over 40 years.

Whether you’re using Google Maps, booking a flight, or routing internet packets, Dijkstra is the engine running in the background.

Since 1984, textbooks have taught that its efficiency was hit by a "sorting barrier."

To find the shortest path, you have to sort the points by distance. And sorting has a mathematical floor you can’t cross.

Until now.

A research team from Tsinghua University just published a paper that shatters the 41-year-old record.

They proved that Dijkstra is not optimal.

By combining the logic of the Bellman-Ford algorithm with a revolutionary "recursive partial ordering" method, they figured out how to find the path without fully sorting the nodes.

The results are a massive shift in theoretical computer science:

- The first deterministic improvement to the Single-Source Shortest Path (SSSP) problem since 1984.

- A new time complexity of $ O(m \log^{2/3} n)$, officially beating the long-standing $ O(m + n \log n)$ limit.

- On massive sparse graphs (like the web or global logistics), this means finding the best route significantly faster than previously thought possible.

For four decades, the greatest minds in algorithms believed this limit was absolute.

Last year, even the legendary Robert Tarjan won an award proving Dijkstra was "optimally efficient" at sorting distances.

Tsinghua’s answer? Stop sorting.

The world’s most settled problem is suddenly wide open again.

1) Na běžný provoz si budeme muset půjčit dvakrát víc než letos.(Letos 47 mld, příští rok 99 mld). Proč dvojnásobnému tempu projídání říkáme “proinvestiční”?
2) Deficit veřejných financí bude 3,5% HDP. Vy ale uvádíte 2,8%, protože odečítáte únikovou doložku obranných výdajů, i když do deficitu patří. U okolních států, se kterými nás srovnáváte, ale tuto doložku neodečítáte. Sčítáte jablka a hrušky, dělíte švestkami. To se Vám zdá férové?

Kdyby Ukrajina padla, tak:

- do unijních států uteče odhadem dalších pět až deset milionů Ukrajinců, takže do Česka klidně až milion

- Rusko donutí mnoho zkušených ukrajinských vojáků, aby bojovali pod jeho vlajkou

- Rusko dostane k dispozici nemalou část západního vojenského arzenálu, který Ukrajina měla

- Rusko získá pod svou kontrolu obrovskou ukrajinskou průnyslovou základnu

Právě proto evropské státy ze všech sil podporují bránící se Ukrajinu.

Aby teroristické Rusko nezvítězilo.

Jen český stát se na nejdůležitější konflikt naší generace vykašlal.

Česká občanská společnost Ukrajině pomáhá jak může, ale vládní koalice skoro všechnu státní asistenci napadené zemi zaškrtila.

Až se budou psát učebnice historie naší doby, současná česká vládní většina tam bude uváděna jako odstrašující příklad bezpáteřnosti a selhání elity dané země.

Známý idiot **Dan Vávra** zase vytáhl rok 1540 a napsal něco ve stylu: „Labe vyschlo a teploty 11 měsíců neklesly pod 30 °C – dnešní horka nejsou nic nového.“

To je přesně ten typ zkratky, která vypadá chytře, ale při bližším pohledu se rozpadá.

1. **11 měsíců nad 30 °C je nesmysl**
Studie (Wetter et al. 2014 a navazující práce) mluví o **11 měsících megasucha** (extrémně málo srážek od jara do zimy). Ne o tom, že by teploty 11 měsíců v kuse neklesly pod 30 °C.
V prosinci, lednu nebo únoru ve střední Evropě 30 °C fyzikálně nemůže nastat – slunce je příliš nízko a dny příliš krátké. Ani při absolutním suchu. Tohle je prostě výmysl nebo hrubé zkreslení.

2. **Teploty tehdy vs. dnes**
Rekonstrukce ukazují, že léto 1540 bylo velmi teplé (pravděpodobně teplejší než 2003 v některých regionech, ale s velkou nejistotou). Jenže to se dělo na pozadí **Malé doby ledové**, kdy byla průměrná teplota planety výrazně nižší než dnes.
Dnešní vlny veder startují z už o cca 1,3–1,5 °C teplejšího základu. Když se k tomu přidá stejná blokující anticyklóna, absolutní teploty jdou výš a déle.

3. **Regionální anomálie vs. globální trend**
Rok 1540 byl klasický evropský blok (vysoký tlak nad střední a západní Evropou, na východě naopak chladno a mokro). Šlo o silný, ale **regionální výkyv**.
Dnešní oteplování je globální – ohřívají se oceány, Arktida, pevnina současně. Není to jeden divoký rok, po kterém se vše vrátí. Je to posun celé základní linie, na které se pak ty „1540-like“ situace odehrávají častěji a intenzivněji.

4. **Frekvence a dopady**
1540 byla extrémní událost jednou za několik století. Dnes se extrémní horka a sucha opakují v mnohem kratších intervalech. A moderní společnost je sice technicky lépe vybavená (klimatizace, logistika), ale zároveň mnohem zranitelnější na systémové úrovni – energetika, zemědělství, vodní zdroje, ekosystémy.

### Co se tehdy skutečně stalo a proč

Nad západní a střední Evropou se usadila velmi stabilní a dlouhotrvající tlaková výše (tzv. blocking ridge / omega blok). Ta prakticky na měsíce odřízla Atlantik a bránila příchodu srážek.

Začalo to už suchým a teplým jarem. Půda se silně vysušila. A tady nastoupila klíčová zpětná vazba: suchá půda skoro neochlazuje vzduch výparem (latentní teplo), takže většina sluneční energie se mění přímo v ohřev (citelné teplo). Teploty rostou, vysychání se zrychluje a situace se sama posiluje.

Výsledek: 11 měsíců extrémního srážkového deficitu, řeky s průtoky kolem 10 % normálu, vyschlé studny, masivní požáry a neúroda. Na východě (Rusko, Finsko) přitom panovaly opačné podmínky – chladno a deštivo. Šlo o klasický, ale mimořádně dlouhý a silný případ atmosférického blokování + zpětné vazby půda–atmosféra.

Argument „bylo to i dřív, tak to není problém“ je stejný, jako kdyby někdo řekl: „Lidé umírali na mor už ve středověku, tak moderní pandemie není nic zvláštního.“
Kontext, frekvence, základní klima a mechanismus jsou jiné.

Rok 1540 dokazuje, že evropský klimatický systém dokáže vygenerovat brutální sucho a horko i bez antropogenních skleníkových plynů. To je fakt.
Ale neříká nic o tom, že dnešní oteplování neexistuje, nebo že se riziko takových (a horších) událostí nezvyšuje. Spíš naopak – ukazuje, co se stane, když se k přirozené variabilitě přidá vyšší základní teplota.

Zkrátka: 1540 byl výjimečný přírodní extrém. Dnešní situace je posunutá základní linie + častější extrémy. To jsou dvě různé věci.

P.S.: Příspěvek jsem napsal proto, že tu lidi zesměšňují Vávru kvůli stupňům Celsia 200 let předtím, než se narodil. To je ale hloupé. Vědci běžně mluví o historických teplotách odhadnutých z proxy dat klidně i miliony let nazpět. Nějakou jednotku pro teploty používat musí – SI jednotkou je Kelvin, ale běžně se používá odvozená jednotka Celsius. Je to stejné jako psát, že něco v minulosti bylo velké x metrů, i když jednotka metru vznikla později. Smějme se Vávrovi, je to namyšlený debil, ale nedělejme blbce ze sebe.
