Another Hindu Temple vandalized - this time the iconic BAPS temple in Chino Hills, CA. It’s just another day in a world where media and academics will insist there is no anti-Hindu hate and that #Hinduphobia is just a construct of our imagination.

Not surprising this happens as the day for a so called "Khalistan referendum" in LA draws close.

Thank you @CongressmanRaja for taking the lead to write and draw attention to the harrowing and continued violence against #BangladeshiHindus . We thank you on behalf of the thousands of diaspora Hindus who have been rallying and advocating for attention to this cause.

#Hindus are a small #minority community (7%) in #Bangladesh, yet they have faced an outsized proportion of the violence following the recent political turmoil-- everything from lynching, murder, rapes, forced resignations and job loss, loss of property to attacks on temples and desecrations of sacred murtis and puja pandals.

Nor is this a new issue linked to a change in governments. In 2021, Bangladeshi Hindus faced a similar onslaught of attacks during #DurgaPuja.

@SecBlinken we request you to refer to State Department Reports dating back to 1971 to see the deep-seated religious animosity faced by Hindus in the country. We request you to ensure that basic #HumanRights and #FreedomofReligion are protected.

Another week, another attack on a #HinduTemple in the US. Even before the dust could settle from the attack in #NewYork, we see the same forces strike in Sacramento, #California.

#Hinduphobia is growing exponentially in the US, primarily because despite repeated and frequent provocations, no culprits have been caught. Sadly, our lawmakers have not focused on driving attention and solving this problem.

As the screengrab below shows, there are deliberate attempts to justify #AntiHinduHate in the guise of politics or "anti-India" speech. If #Hindus react, with even something simple like emailing, calling or meeting with their lawmakers to ask for help, they can be the ones accused of supporting "transnational repression instead.”

We ask again, what does #FreedomofReligion mean for minority #HinduAmericans in this context, when our sacred spaces that should sanctuaries for solace, are violated with impunity?

We are alarmed at the violence against #Bangladeshi Hindus. Even as it sees leadership changes, political turmoil in the country is once again being used to attack its #religiousminority. There are disturbing reports of #Hindutemples and individuals being attacked.

We urge the media, #HumanRights groups and institutions to pay attention to and protect this highly vulnerable group. Over the past decade, #Bangladesh has been wracked by depressingly regular bouts of #antiHindu violence. And during the 1971 Genocide, #Hindus in then East Pakistan, faced a state-sponsored pogrom as international institutions and watchdogs looked away.

Hasn’t America been taken over by Christian evangelicals, it’s the values we all stand for. Hindus have always been seekers and peace loving religious community.

A course from @WUSTL titled “Hinduism & the Hindu Right” is a matter of great concern for the #Hindu community at large. We are already hearing from concerned students, who fear that it singles out their faith. It risks further stigmatizing Hindus worldover and particularly in the United States where anti-Hindu sentiment and #Hinduphobia is rising.

Though we welcome discussions on all topics and celebrate scholarly freedom, we must publicly make it clear that balance and a semblance of equal treatment are also required.

Yesterday, we highlighted how far right extremists target the community with racial and bigoted slurs like “Pajeet” to create hate and otherize Hindus, using the #BaltimoreBridgeCollapse tragedy as cover.

Today’s example illustrates how academically sanctioned #Hinduphobia breeds on university campuses and creates an unsafe environment for #Hindus. Without any balance or context, it creates the idea that ONLY Hinduism and Hindus are inherently oppressive. It leads to othering of Hindu and #Indian students on campuses, along with bullying and harassment.

We wonder for instance, if this South Asia focused course will include discussion of the #1971BangladeshGenocide, where no less a personage than Senator Edward Kennedy had called out the mass targeting of Bengali Hindus. Ironically, March 25, 2024 marked 53 years since the start of what would become the worst mass slaughter the world has seen since the #Holocaust.

This course, offered through the South Asian Languages and Culture minor in the Department of Department of Jewish, Islamic, and Middle Eastern Studies (interestingly), directly targets #Hinduism - something that we saw during the 2021 “Dismantling Global Hindutva” Conference, which was sanctioned by over 50 university departments. Academics in that conference, openly called for a dismantling of Hinduism and stated that Hinduism is a danger to peace and universal brotherhood. Even popular Hindu last names were deemed to be problematic. While the department teaches Urdu and introduction to Islamic Civilization, no other religion or country in South Asia is targeted and linked to extremism in the department except for #India and Hinduism. And, while professing opportunities to “deepen appreciation of these complex and diverse societies and cultures,” the only two featured courses related to Hinduism and India under South Asian Studies are Hindi and Hinduism & the Hindu Right. https://t.co/lXQDLlFLLl.

Sadly, this is a prevalent trend on college campuses and must be addressed by all to create a safer space for Hindu and Indian origin students.

We call upon @WashUChancellor and Provost @WendlandBeverly to create an opportunity for balanced debate and learning on such nuanced topics without targeting Hinduism.
