I can relate.
I had playtesters try my game and got sent videos. Tutorial had text in it, he like 'nah not reading that'. Skipped tutorial. Did not see any in-game tooltip. Did not even see on-screen animations that mimicked what the player was supposed to do. He literally said 'there should be a tutorial' and 'there really should be an animation showing me what to do'. Super frustrating.
I literally yelled at my screen.

@cryptopatrick@bjornornorn@arowx Depends on what you want to make and what you want to learn, and what languages you know. Personally I like custom engines written in a major language that abstracts away the bare metal OpenGL stuff. Like LibGDX or Raylib.
