A security operation in Samburu East has sparked protests and calls for an independent investigation after hundreds of livestock were killed during a multi-agency crackdown launched to recover livestock stolen from Isiolo and seize illegal firearms, with Samburu Governor Lati Lelelit saying more than 700 animals were shot dead over four days and local associations documenting at least 717 livestock lost so far.

Sad scenes in Samburu as Police officers shot dead over 700 goats, 500 cattle, and several donkeys .

Local herders reported that a heavy contingent of police officers, believed to be from the General Service Unit (GSU) and the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), arrived via helicopters and lorries.

Herders alleged that the officers used both automatic weapons and explosives to target the animals near watering points and dams .
