It’s also worth noting that while Hearn *did* travel to Japan and settled there, Van Gogh never had the means to ever travel to Japan. His main ideas came from the woodblock prints he collected, which ultimately influenced his vision of the country. Very similar to today, imo!
why is Lafcadio Hearn the first image on the Japanophilia Wikipedia page? that’s really funny, I’m not saying it’s *wrong*, but it’s funny seeing this guy and then scrolling down to see a definition of weeaboo
I think Hearn is interesting because he was, ultimately, someone who lived somewhat nomadically. Van Gogh tried (and failed!) to establish an artist commune modeled after his (inaccurate!) ideas of Japan, and this directly led to some of his mental deterioration.
