I see a lot of people ask what does Karrigan do differently.
I think it's interesting, because he represents a dying breed of IGL's.
In the past, you had strats, you had set pieces, but also a lot of the game was reacting and feeding off what happens. Modern CS is a lot of protocols, if X happens, we react with Y, X player has X responsibility.
Where Karrigan excels is these mid round moments. Changing and shaping calls on the fly. You're never as polished as a team with well drilled rehearsed strata and protocols, but you are infinitely more flexible.
Additionally, the IGL builds the culture within a team. At his best, Karrigan puts the belief and trust in his players to make their own moves. You aren't X player responsible for X thing. You are a thinking moving active piece on the board. If needed you can make your own move.
Again not as polished as something that's rehearsed and drilled, but once more infinitely more flexible. You can react, in an instant, without hesitation if you feel you have timing or a window to exploit. This is why we see Teses having these massive impactful rounds, playing like never before. He has a new degree of freedom within a very chaotic system.
As you do it more, as you become more comfortable you reads, your hero moments become more frequent. Because now you are attune to the flow of the game.
It's also why his games are always entertaining. ANYTHING can happen at any time.
The culture, the style, it lends itself to extreme flexibility, extreme adaption, individuals playing their round and syncing up together.
Modern IGL's build game plans, they write poetic versus, Karrigan is the master at freestyle, at adlibs. It's raw, it's reactive, in essence every piece has a freedom to move and play off eachother. When it works, it is impossible to read, impossible to predict. The lows are lower, but the highs are higher. There's nothing like it.
