Ghana, 1979 — After years of military rule, Ghana was preparing to return to civilian democracy. In early 1979, Lt. Gen. Fred Akuffo’s Supreme Military Council allowed new political parties to organize and state their plans ahead of elections. But on 4 June, J.J. Rawlings and the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council overthrew the military government. The elections still went ahead, and Dr. Hilla Limann of the People’s National Party won, leading Ghana into the Third Republic.
