For someone who's grappled with anxiety and panic attacks, my greatest lesson is to surrender and let go of control.

Control is an illusion that plagues leaders; cholerics in particular. And chaos and open-ended problems afflict melancholics in no small measure. We are always seeking resolution.

The thing is, the worst happened. The dreaded shoe actually dropped and yet, here I am. So what was all the wasted emotional energy for?

I still don't know where I'm headed and how things will be resolved, but it's okay. I'm happy for this reprieve.

I still feel like I should be applying energy to things and working really hard, but I'm accepting there's nothing to do now.

A huge part of my spiral was the lack of correlation between what was happening and what God said. So, my faith was in tatters, hence the despair.

I'm now learning to not take things at face value, and to look beyond to what is unseen. To also attempt trust in the midst of waiting and gnawing boredom.

I'm on the "balcony" of life. Observing and interpreting. Not rushing to solutions or interventions.

It's an awkward place and very unfamiliar for someone who's used to doing.

But in all things, God still proved himself to be kind. And that is important to me.

There are things that make business so inhospitable in Nigeria, yet we just find a way to move on.

The fact that CAC could issue two conflicting statements within 48 hours, with no advance warning was triggering.

The recent NIBBS statement about Payment Solution Service Providers is another one. Then the CBN circular about in-country USD bank transfers.

It's not even whether these directives are good for the nation. It's the fact that one wakes up and an entire business model has changed without warning.

How do you do business in a country where no one consults the very SMEs that are meant to grow the economy. Where there is no predictability? Just overnight surprises.

It seems the only businesses that are not perturbed are those with incredible lobbying capacity and agents in every branch of government. Because they seem to be the only ones that are not surprised.

Nigeria is NOT ready to grow SMEs. At all.
