The EU has started the process of withdrawing the registration of ESN as a political party group.

On July 7th, the European Parliament voted in favor of having the independent Authority for European Political Parties and European Political Foundations (APPF) to investigate whether ESN complies with core EU values (democracy, rule of law, human dignity, human rights).

This is the first such values-based review of its kind.

The ESN stands to lose €2 million in funding per year if the political group is deregistered.

The trigger was a detailed ~300-page letter from the APPF in late May 2026, citing evidence (court rulings, statements, social media) of alleged anti-immigration and anti-LGBT rhetoric from ESN members.

"The withdrawal of recognition or funding from a European political party constitutes one of the most severe institutional measures available under Union law.

Such a measure cannot be justified by disagreement with a party's political programme, criticism of the current trajectory of European integration, or advocacy for alternative constitutional or institutional arrangements."
