@zanyfen It’s infuriating how much of the intellectual leftist spaces on here seem to be about shooting down low-hanging fruits and then adding “Marx and Freud were Science, actually”
These guys. (Maybe skip the Hutchinson piece, he’s never that interesting. and Read can be annoying too)
Also perhaps some of Buber, who’s the other, more remote figure in the background besides W
Who is your favourite "outsider" philosopher (one whom you consider to be a significant thinker, but who is mostly ignored by the mainstream tradition or considered to be beyond the pale of academic respectability)?
@PokkinenAntti@rautakansleri_@TereSammallahti Tieteillä tosiaan on eroja.
@DevinGoure@boreddeleuzian We’ll have to disagree then. I just can’t find Sass to be saying anything even tentatively positive about madness, except perhaps as a resource to criticize modern reason. Which is not nothing, but…
@DevinGoure@boreddeleuzian That said, a couple of days of solipsistic derealization brought on by a physically mild COVID and a single sleepless and hyper-reflective night was one of the worst and emptiest experiences of my life. I’m not saying Sass & Rupert Read aren’t on to something, as far as it goes.
@DevinGoure@boreddeleuzian Even when there’s Sassian stuff, I’ve mostly experienced it as hyper-reflexivity/overthinking carrying me to the border of something alien, or (worse, much worse) a delirious attempt at rationality, an overflowing of inner monologue as a panic reaction to a strike of madness.
@DevinGoure@boreddeleuzian Well yes, there are dangers to everything, including madness (esp. trying to control it when that no longer works)—why do you think it’s more dangerous than (AI-influenced) sanity? I think being held captive by “Narcissus’s image” is bad. Why are madpeople more susceptible to it?
@adastroworld@virgil_30@doxntme Also formerly my second and final therapist. The nicest old man I’ve ever met, with nothing of the typical psychiatrist’s dogmatic authoritarianism, hard or soft. We often ended up just debating he right way to read Wittgenstein and it was all the better for it
@adastroworld@virgil_30@doxntme I’ve only ever heard women self-diagnose “daddy issues” when it’s been just about age and like, steadiness, maybe some sort of guidance. Last time it was a friend of a friend re: sending her therapist unsolicited nudes
