Exclusive: IIT Bombay Alumni Amogh gives chilling experience of castism while he was doing B Tech + M Tech Dual Degree in Chemical Engineering
Amogh is now PhD from USA
He told me
“IIT Bombay has history of systemic casteism. This happened to me in 2012 after I caught dengue. I almost lost my life because of a dangerously low platelet count, missed a month of classes, and had to drop courses.
During counseling, I was sent to an Electrical Engineering professor who was supposedly an “expert” in handling such cases, even though I was from another department. I was accompanied by my 1st year mentor who took me the office of this so-called “expert”. After my mentor left the office this so-called expert asked me my JEE rank and told me I did not deserve to be in IIT Bombay because of my SC rank, and that reservation was not meant for people like me whose family was not poor. He asked about my father’s income; I said we were a lower-middle-class family. He was supposed to help and guide me to recover in academics after a life threatening illness but the entire conversation was shaming me for my caste.
I never spoke about this to anyone until I was mature enough to understand what had happened. By then it was too late. My confidence was shattered in the first semester itself after he told me I would not get more than a 6-point CPI. I was only 18, vulnerable, and easily manipulated.
People ask why Sahil didn’t tell the SC ST cell. Well, the cell is defunct. “

In the memory of Narendra Dhabolkar, who was shot dead 6 years ago today, we observe National Scientific Temper Day.
The dark forces of obscurantism and superstition can never kill the ideas of Dhabolkar.
Let's fight to build a 'New India' of science, reason and logic!
Keeping all arguments for and against 370 or the way the government went about it aside, we should be deeply disturbed that we have lost the ability to empathise with people. That this is seen as revenge and is being celebrated with such jingoism is so worrying.
@chapidee remembered a bit from a stand up comedian (can't remember the name). He says to somebody following their passion: 'aap ko to maja aa rha hai na isme..paise bhi chahiye? '
