Much of the problems in today's world come from the deterioration of ability to reason and the tendency of the general population to oversimplify and trivialise issues at hand.
Some of the contributing factors impairing our ability to reason effectively and objectively are:
1. Decline in critical thinking skills
Education systems often prioritize memorization over critical thinking, leaving individuals ill-equipped to analyze complex issues.
2. Echo chambers & confirmation bias
Social media & news outlets create echo chambers, reinforcing oversimplification & discouraging diverse perspectives.
3. Soundbite culture
Media's focus on attention-grabbing headlines promotes simplified narratives, while emotions overtake logic in forming opinions.
4. Emotional reasoning
Emotion-driven opinions and prioritizing personal experiences can lead to resistance in considering alternative views, causing polarization and oversimplification.
5. Decreased attention spans
Decreased attention spans make it difficult to engage with complex topics, and misinformation online hinders informed opinions.
6. Misinformation & disinformation
The abundance of misleading online information makes it hard to discern reliable sources, leading to oversimplified narratives and uninformed opinions.
7. "Everyone gets a trophy" culture
The "everyone gets a trophy" culture diminishes healthy competition, inflates self-esteem, & hinders personal growth, making it difficult to develop reasoning skills.
If we're to come back on the right track as a civilisation we need to double down on equipping our societies with critical thinking skills and adressing all of the above issues.
