"Levels are not hard and fast, but a tool or guide for reading. We never have recommended labeling books in a classroom library.”
PLEASE PASS THAT AROUND!

Incredible post from Maggie Roberts: Taking Inventory: Building A Positive School Culture from the Inside Out.
I wonder; If YOU had the courage to stand in YOUR hallway during the busiest time of day, What culture would YOU see?

LOVE THIS: The principal & Asst principal did a mini lesson w/ 1/2 the kids & the coach gave them feedback. Then they did it w/ the other 1/2 using that feedback.
BRILLIANT! Principals do you have the courage to do this? Think of the message it sends Ts

I LOVE so many but this is a definite standout: "A workshop approach is designed to emphasize the act of writing itself -- students spend most of their time putting pencil to paper, not just learning about it….”
Engagement + authenticity.

“And I know that this is going to upset some people, but if you have a lot of students failing your tests, and those students are in class and they’re showing up, then the problem is not them.” - @cultofpedagogy#UDL https://t.co/235hpLsYaR
I'm paraphrasing, but @BobProbst said that a pedagogy that does not release scaffolds & lead children to independence is "immoral." I couldn't agree more! Teachers who mindlessly adhere to mandates that require us to disempower children are inflicting violence on them. #BBLit19
#ThoughtForTheDay Imagine a school where kids are walking down the hallway & every adult is doing their best to interact w/every one of them because they see every kid as their kid. Now ask yourself, “Is this your school?” Every student. Every Day. Whatever it Takes. #Culturize
A3 Sadly, a confusing issue that is gaining ground is an obsession with computerized interventions (which is not even a thing). Trusting a computer to do what only a teacher do and then having the audacity to call it an “intervention” is an embarrassment to us all. #G2Great
#ThoughtForTheDay Effective T's have high standards for all kids every day. They do not make excuses based on race, socio-economic class, environment or poor parenting. They believe in all kids all of the time, & more importantly, love them as tho they were their own. #Culturize
Editing does NOT show up in the standards until grade 2 in the standards so we need to keep this in mind. First we need to get a lot of words down and get in a lot of practice first.
@franmcveigh#iowareads#readingrockstars#G2great
Let's keep in mind that writing is the IN-road to reading and that writers become better readers through writing (Donald Graves, Peter Elbow, Colleen Cruz) Of course the perverse is also true but I think that means that we increase volume in reading AND writing #G2Great
Worth reposting from Stephen Krashen: Beginning Reading: The (HUGE) role of stories and the (LIMITED) Role of Phonics.
Language Magazine April, 2019.
Then why do we continue this agenda riddled battle to the contrary ad nauseam?

Think for a minute about the very best boss you ever worked for in the past. That person likely had your back, supported and challenged you, and was invested in your success. He or she wanted you to get better and to do well in your role. @LRobbTeacher#TheTenMinutePrincipal
As teachers we often feel we must respond to student comments. But we can also take a "blank turn"--we can just give the floor back to the speaker. "Say more." "Tell me more about that." "Tell me more about your thinking." "Keep going." They often need a second (or 3rd) try.
A7 It’s critical that teachers are not just teaching writing but are stepping into the role of writer on a daily basis. We can’t ask children to do what we are no willing to do so we make it a priority every day. #G2Great
#ThoughtForTheDay Don’t ever stop believing you can be the change. The kind of change that when you look into the eyes of a student, teacher or principal whose inner voice is saying, “I don’t think I can do this” your eyes, your voice, your actions say, “Yes you can!” #Culturize
