Meet Kirti Chakra Awardee Lance Naik Meenatchi Sundaram A..... A Story of Unbreakable Courage

Some stories of bravery go beyond medals. They become symbols of the fighting spirit of the Indian Army.

On 19 December 2024, during a counter-terrorist operation in Kulgam, South Kashmir, Lance Naik Meenatchi Sundaram A of the Regiment of Artillery, serving with 34 Rashtriya Rifles, found himself in the middle of a fierce gun battle against heavily armed terrorists.

As the firefight intensified, he was struck by bullets, sustaining severe gunshot wounds to his face and right shoulder. The injuries were grave. For most people, such wounds would have meant immediate evacuation and survival becoming the only priority.

But soldiers of the Indian Army are made differently.

Ignoring excruciating pain, loss of blood, and the immediate threat to his own life, Lance Naik Meenatchi Sundaram A refused to withdraw. Instead, he pressed forward and continued engaging the terrorists.

Displaying extraordinary courage and determination, he closed in on the enemy and engaged in close combat. Despite his injuries, he successfully neutralised a hardcore terrorist at close range, ensuring the success of the operation and safeguarding his comrades.

His actions reflected the highest traditions of military service—placing mission and comrades above self.

For this exceptional display of valour, indomitable spirit, and devotion to duty, he was awarded the Kirti Chakra, Bharat's second-highest peacetime gallantry award.

On 8 June 2026, the award was presented to him by Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Lance Naik Meenatchi Sundaram A's story reminds us that courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is the determination to keep moving forward despite fear, pain, injury, and danger.

He took a bullet to his face.

Yet he continued to fight.

He stood like steel in the face of death.

And he showed the nation what the Indian Army truly stands for.
