Codex just launched one of the coolest features - Appshots.
by pressing both CMD keyboard buttons, context of whatever app you're on gets sent to Codex, including screenshots and text.
you might be thinking "isn't this the same as screenshotting and pasting it", and no it isn't.
Appshots also pass in context from the app that isn't visible on the screen. For example if you're viewing a Google Doc and take an appshot, it passes in text that's scrolled offscreen as well.
along with this release, OpenAI made remote Codex still work even while your laptop screen is locked, so you can leave your laptop on 24/7 at home, safely, while you code from your phone.
highly recommend trying out the Codex app - so many features that don't exist elsewhere yet and the app is just delightful to use
btw this is one of the best codex plugins if you're doing web dev
it gets the agent to perform testing every time that it does frontend work, including starting dev server -> in-app browser testing -> taking screenshots for you to review
it even tests mobile viewports too
most people that use the Codex app will agree
it's the closest to being the AI 'everything app' right now, and the upcoming super app will solidify this
Iβm going to make a claim that might feel similarly hyperbolic now but could feel obvious in the following months β ChatGPT/Codex is reinventing personal computing.
looks like /side chats in Codex don't have a short expiry anymore so they don't randomly die on you now
i think they most likely last until you close the side chat or close the app
@BDoma for this one specifically, it just automatically invokes when i ask for frontend changes or frontend bugfixes - i.e. it spins up the dev server, tests with in-app browser, and screenshots it

i feel like one reason is that OpenAI knows their harness is the best place to use GPT 5.5, or wants it to be the best, which is why they allow you to use your sub anywhere.
if a majority of users want to use GPT 5.5 elsewhere, then they know there's room for improvement.
since everyone is forced to use their Claude sub in Claude Code, it's hard to tell whether it's due to the product being good or if it's due to the lock-in
also i use the Codex app more but i think the Claude Code app is pretty good too - just needs improvements to the in-app browser, computer use, and keyboard shortcuts imo
i'm pretty confident this app merge is gonna go well given that the Codex app is basically all 3 combined already
just hoping that we get the Codex app UI rather than the ChatGPT one
also hoping it's named Codex or it's gonna be so confusing to say "ChatGPT" π€£
OpenAI is merging ChatGPT, Codex and its Atlas browser into one desktop app and recasting Codex from a coding tool into a productivity app it says anyone can use.
The figures it has been handing out to support that: 5 million weekly Codex users, enterprise revenue up 50% week over week, usage growing 5% a day.
Those come from an all-hands and an internal staff note, relayed by people familiar with the remarks.
Codex is increasingly evolving into a true work platform. And GPT-5.6 is also on the horizon. Great things are expected from OpenAI in the near future.
